hey guys,
I have just bought a fairly decent 1978 Celica and I have no idea at all about it. When it comes to old school toyotas, im not very knowledgeable, however, all mitsubishis and nissans I do - since ive owned a Starion turbo and a 180sx.
My celica appears to be a RA40 - however - it has round headlights as opposed to all the ones I have seen with Square headlights - what Is the deal. I know it has a 18R.It performs ok for a old car and the interior is pretty specced for its age. The guy told me it was converted to a 5 speed a while ago - so its originally a auto. the only badges on the back are 2000 and LT.
What type is it (round headlights) and could you please direct me in the way of some decent modifications - apart from exhaust as its my daily driver and I dont want unecessary attention.
Ill take some pictures soon - it has some realllllly awesome Speedy mags on it which make it look really nice on the road. Its white in colour too.

Sounds like an early RA40, they came with both square headlights and round ones.
As far as modifications are concerned, I wouldn't do anything like an exhaust or any mods in the search for more power. The 18R-C is not a performance engine, nor will it ever be.
If you want more power I'd be looking at maybe an 18RG swap or even a 1G.

Well, im not after a monster powered celica - just one that goes a LITTLE bit better than stock. I have a 260 RWHP 180sx so I have powerful car. Just wanted my celica to perform a LITTLE better - any tips on tuning up the car etc?

I'm pretty sure you can get extractors for them, but even a worked 18R-C is going to be only a little less slow rather than quick.
Perhaps an 18RG would be a good option if you're after a bit more power without a heap more of the expense.

I agree, get an 18R-GEU and you'll get the benefits of EFI as well. The car won't be a rocketship but it will be a big improvement over the 18R-C, and physically installing it couldn't be easier.
