Reving Problem

I own a AE82 corolla (Carbie), when the car is in no gear and I press the accelerator pedel and release, the engine revs (say 2000rpm) but sticks on the 2000rpm for a few seconds then goes down slowley. It dosen't go down the second I release the accelerator pedel like a normal car would. But if I have the aircon on this problem dosen't occur the revs drop down normally. What could be the cause of this engine still reving(few seconds) after I release the accelerator pedel??

sticky throtte bearing, acc cable, goo inside the intake (pcv), gummed up carb jets.
get a can of 'carby cleaner' the $2 stuff, and just go NUTS on the carby and surrounds, with and without the engine running.
cheers ed

Many engines have a device to deliberately slow the throttle closing. This reduces nitrogen oxides or something. Even efi cars have it. It looks like a daphram thing with a rod sticking out into the throttle linkage. Sort of like suspension for your throttle.

this on 2TGEUs Jonny? I've just fixed my throttle so i get 100% instead of 80%. It was as simple as flipping the cable holder 180deg and adjusting out the slack again
BTW: what are the 2 air tubes on the diaghram for idle air bypass for?

Does your car have an A/C idle up diagphragm linked to the throttle? When they get old they can spring a leak, causing symptoms like you describe. Ones that I have seen bump up the idle when there is no vacuum applied.
