1jz - order of mods?
|

Ok I have a stock 1jz except air filter and 3" exhaust (standard Y-pipe) and I am not sure which order i should get my mods done for best 'bang for the buck'?
The mods I would like are:
twin dump pipes (what size do people recommend?)
Celicamad boost controller
thicker and slightly larger intercooler. (currently front mounted jzx90 type, similar to jza70.)
thanks
Chris

I'd go dump pipes first, then intercooler. After that you might find you don't need a boost controller.

I reckon you should go for a bigger intercooler, best OEM is the GTR, but you can buy equivalent new hybrids nowadays for the same price. Core is 600x300x70 AFAIK, I have a 400x500x57mm custom in front of my 1J.
As for the dumps i made mine myself. Laser cut flange, then 2" stainless for the turbine and 1.5" for the wastegate then merging into a 2.5" reducer with flange, all in 1.6mm wall thickness.
I think your boost will go over 12psi with these mods, and your exhaust, perhaps 15 psi? If you have the standard computer i think you need a boost cut defender, not sure though as im using Haltech.

Yeah you ride the boost cut with dual dumps and intercooler.
With my 600x300x90 bar and plate cooler and the dual dumps it rides 0.9bar most of the time. I have hit boost cut only a couple of times though at 1.0bar when it spiked.
I'm not running a boost controller, stock actulators.

thanks guys.
after those mods the ECU will be next to get rid of boost cut and speed cut and get a few extra kws

Anyone who has done it want to hazzard a guess as to boost with exhaust & BFMIC, sans dump pipe? I'm guessing (hoping) it'd be somewhere around 10-12psi, which still leaves me a bit of scramble room before cut.
cheers,
Justin

Our 1J cressida is only hitting 10psi with 3" straight through exhaust & 600x300x75 bar & plate 'cooler. It is running standard JZA-70 air box & filter, but has been opened up quite a lot & only gets air from outside the engine bay.
I might go & try it without the filter to see if that's causing a restriction...

yeah, mine runs 10psi max with the current 3" exhaust to the standard Y-pipe and an aftermarket air filter. So with a bigger intercooler and twin dump pipes i would be pretty close to boost cut?
I think I will be getting a computer not too long after that anyway as my speedo is out and my speed cut will be around 150km instead of 180 and I can't be stuffed getting all sorts of little defender thingies.

Just one thing to think about.
What are you going to do when one of the twins blow??
Replace/Rebuild?? Or go Single??
If you plan to go single I wouldn't bother getting some twin dumps made as they will become useless = waste of $$$.
ps. XT130 + 1JZ-GTE = JZT130 does it not!?!?!

Yeh, this is one of the reasons I've held off on a custom dump. Will probably get Haltech as next performance upgrade (after diff). I'm still very undecided whether I will eventually go GT3040 single or GCG's ball bearing GT25/ct12 hiflow hybrids. In the meantime, I guess I should nurse those babies on medium boost

before I was all set to go single in the near future and then reality hit and I realised how expensive it is. So I was going to do some normal mods first and then evaluate if I want it to be faster.
My car only weighs about 1150kgs so I don't really need as much power as something like a JZA70 to go as fast.
I think I will get the intercooler first, then possibly boost controller, then I am going to japan so I will pick up some injectors. Then save for an ECU (wolf 3d or Micro LTX12 I think) and then whack the injectors in and get a turbo and exhaust manifold installed. Of just stop after the boost controller and wait until my turbos blow
Thanks people

Hey Chris,
I'm in the same boat - mine is somewhere around 1200kg. I'm leaning towards the hoflows at the moment for the low-mid torque. I have to keep reminding myself that awesome power over 110kph isn't much use to me.

I'll be looking along the lines of a GT3040 when something happens to the twins.
Nothing too big as all topend power is useless most of the time!!

Thats a odd POV, why bother putting a 1JZ in then!?!?!
You have to think a little wider ie; Trackdays etc... when you can fully utilise the 1JZ.
I wouldn't/couldn't limit myself to only using 1st & 2nd gear to get 110 as quick as possible, what are the other 3 for, various levels of cruising!?!?!
But I guess everyone has different reasons for doing their conversions.

my car is for drag racing, so I think that i could certainly do with a nice big single turbo!
On top of the costs of fitting a single turbo, i remind myself that the faster you go the more often you break stuff

I don't think thats odd. I chose to go for a 1JZ over a 1UZ as it has a fatter torque curve down low, better pulling power for the 4b , and for that matter higher peak torque. A 1UZFTTE or 2JZGTE would be more ideal for low down pulling power, but not as cost effective
