Hi everyone,
well im finally about to change my engine from a stock 4ac to a 4age.
I want to know peoples ideas on what type of fuel setup to use! I dont know if i should use a surge tank setup or go try and find a efi fuel tank!
Was just wondering what would be the better setup in terms of cost, effectivness, and ease of setup...
thanks

Ease of setup will be a AE86 EFI tank with EFI pump already in it all bolts in!
But... people seem to ask crazy prices for AE86 EFI tanks! There was one for sale on the forum and the dude was chasing $500! yah right.
I've heard AE92? pumps fit in the AE86 tank with some small mods, but still means you have no good baffling.
There isn't much room under the AE86 for a lift pump, surge tank, efi pump etc. You can put in engine bay but not such a good idea as the fuel doesn't get much of a chance to cool down. I wouldn't recommend putting surge tanks and junk in the boot, its illegal and smells no matter how well you seal it.
Sorry just throwing ideas around there...
My AE86 currently has a efi pump cable tied to the tank. Definately not ideal but it was a rushed conversion and well its been that way for 2 + years now and never missed a beat.
I think next time i'll try fitting a pump inside the original tank, maybe get some baffling added also.
Cheers
Joel

in my first 86, i used a vl commodore fuel pump mounted above the middle of the diff (nothing got hit/bumped), didn't use a surge tank, just the aussie fuel tank, all worked perfectly, if you want cheap and easy this is the way to go.

in my last sprinter i at first i had the surge tank in the "boot" with the lift pump and efi pump there also. noisy, smelly, and definately not legal.
i still put up with it though, until i wanted to sell the car. my solution then was to have a much smaller surge tank made up, which was fitted over on the passenger side of the car, there is a small triangularish shaped area behind a chassis cross brace. i ran all my lines along and mounted my fuel pumps to this. the exhaust runs close to this area too, so i made up a heat shield also.
so there is JUST enough room to run a surge tank under the car, if you want to.

With the fuel pump above the diff, is that the actual efi pump?
correct me if im wrong but i was told that efi pumps dont like pumping long distances (from above the diff to the engine)
and thats its better to put the efi pump in the engine bay and run a lift pump to it!
Or do u use the existing pump to feed fuel to the efi pump situated above the diff?
sorry about this, its alot better if i had a site with a diagram
or pictures..
thanx for the help anywyas

I got a vn pump and tank. Took it too a metal fabrication workshop, got the guy to rip open the vn tank and weld the baffles and all the rest into my standard tank.
All up it only cost about $250 i think it was.
Now i have baffles, efi pump and an endless list of upgrades if i need it.

I'm doing my fuel setup today actaully...
I've got a Vl turbo pump for $100, theres one screw hole above the diff that is on the angle, best to have the pump on the angle, a bit of common sense when your under there will see what i mean.
i'm using the original fuel lines, like with EFi hoses efi clamps etc,
i've heard many people saying this works perfectly fine, as long as you keep the fuel level in your tank higher than a 1/4

Well i have decided to go with a surge tank setup, with a vl turbo efi pump.
Does anyone know of a good lift pump to get, to feed fuel to the surge tank??

Might head down to Holley Performance Parts, in flemington and check out the 97 GPH "Red" Electric Fuel Pump, should provide sufficient fuel flow to the surge!!
heres what im on about!!

if you are "only" upgrading to the 4age, just get a normal vl fuel pump (non- turbo), should cost about $150 brand new, or go to a wrecker and get a second hand one (even a tired one will more than likely pump enough fuel for a 4age.)

yeah they sure are, thats what i used, with the budget setup i had, i never even had issues with fuel cut-out (with low tank level) so make the decision to get a surge tank after you give this setup a go, i used the factory fuel lines also, (ie 4ac), so technically for $100-150 should see you right all up, including filter, hoses, clamps, etc....., i know that "they" say that the 4ac fuel lines are inadequate but they served me fine, the import that i have now seems to have the same size lines, i have a gze and sr20 turbo pump mounted in my tank and have never had any issues. good luck.
