20V AE71 Panel Van or 20v KE30 conversions, need answers Wed, 04 February 2004 10:29 Go to next message
I need some help answering a few questions

i've got a running 20V in my sprinter but would like to out the engine into something a bit more old school. I'm either thinking of putting it into a AE71 panel van (correct me if i'm wrong) or a ke30 two door.
if i'm not mistaken i believe that the panel vans have a 4A in them so the conversion would only require some alterations to the tail shaft and gearbox cross member. I've also been told that the engine crossmember from the sprinter bolts up to a KE70 body, and was wondering would this be the same for a KE30, seeing that they share the same engine series. any help would be appriciated.
NOTE: 20V is already running coil packs and water set-up for RWD

i believe the KE70 floorpan is almost identical to the AE86 floorpan (ie AE70/71 = AE86)

KE30 totally differnt front chassis rails. the KE70 are wider apart, and splay outwards toward the front. the KE30 are thinner and parallel.

for my money, go the KE/AE70..

main reasons?? wider track (although marginal) and...

RACK AND PINION Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

having great steerign will make the world of difference when you ae going fast.

also its worth considering an AE71 sedan.... since the AE71 panel van has a leaf sprung rear end vs the sedan's coil sprung rear.

I would agree with Stewart here... the AE71 is a bolt in job, identical to what you have done in your AE86.

That said though, i do believe that the KE30 is lighter... and since weight is the ultimate enemy of the 20V, the extra costs of custom engine mounts etc may be outweighed in straight line performance.

It depends on what end result you want really.
AE71 = easy, cheap, better handling, maybe more wieght
KE30 = harder, more expensive, lighter, straight line speed, less handling

Yeah AE-71 would be the go it is a straight bolt in job as AE-71's run a 4A-C with T-50 same as sprinter's. It has a hydro clutch unlike the KE series and if u have any suspension bits they will bolt up th the AE.
If u go for a sedan watch because there is the KE-70 HI-CAM which cosmeticaly look like an AE but it is a KE.

Where in SYD r u??

you probably wont find a rolling chassis that will be in any good condition!!!

best way is just check out the 100 or so you find every week in the TP (trading post), and you will definitely find yourself a little bargain at around $1500 with a perfect body, owned by some grandpa, with a nice interior. Dont worry if the engine is good or bad, you really wont save much there.

Even if you find one with a good body, and a UTS interior, dont fret - Pick and Payless is there to help. THey have about 20 KE70/AE71's with good interior bits and other crap. They have saved my arse about 100 times!
