I have a feeling the GZE ceased production before 97, so this conversion won't be street-legal.

I dont see how it would not be legal,
I have an 89 motor in a 93 corolla, engineered and passed by the rta.

if it is the same model... then it CAN be passed by the condition that states that you can install an engine that was available for that model of car.
HOWEVER - if that engine was NOT available for that model car from the factory, then the engine MUST BE NEWER than the car. Hence a 1997 corolla that was never available from the factory with a 4A-GZE cannot have a GZE put into it. THe only option you have is to modify your engine using some GZE parts (maintaining your original block) or to go all out with a late model 3S-GTE.
Either way is not cheap im afraid

May i recommend something before you even consider this conversion seriously....
TALK TO AN ENGINEER ABOUT THE LEGALITY OF THIS CONVERSION!!
.....rather than listen to me and a bunch of other ill-informed randoms.
