icon4.gif  buying a W* g/box - what to look for??? Thu, 05 February 2004 07:36 Go to next message
Hey guys,

i've finally got around to sourcing a gearbox...a guy i know has both a w57 & w58 for sale. Depending on condition i'll take the better of the two. Now when it comes to inspection is there anything i should be looking out for with either of these boxes? is there anything exterior i need to be looking for? or is it a case of not really knowing until you pull the thing apart?

i dont really know what im meant to be looking for...i will be taking a mate along but i want to at least have some understanding of whats good and whats not Smile

any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers
Nick

Cant really tell from outside, just check all the gears work, spin the input/output shafts.
Try and get a guarentee off him that it is good, and if it isnt, you can come back and swap for the other

W58 has a better cruising ratio, but thats the only difference.

Dont worry about the shifter being sloppy, you can fix this with about $25 worth of parts from Toyota

How much are you paying?

Try and get the right shifter position (although it is interchangable later)

Anything else?

im primarily chasing the w58...i've heard they can handle more power than the 57 can (not like i'd need it but Smile )

he's got both advertised for around $550...i guess i'll just have to wait and see

i was hoping to be able to check out synchro's and make sure general condition isnt too worn

yeah i dont want to be cutting into the trans tunnel...if i can get a box with the shifter towards the middle it'd suit...i've been told the ra model is suited well for this...shall soon see Smile

thanks cruzsida

Shifter positions can be swapped with relative ease

I hope that $550 is from an importer/wrecker.

You can get them for that price with a warantee.

I wouldnt be worried about breaking it, unless you are putting a 7mgte or 1uzfe infront or it (or in Norbies case 2jzgte)

take a magnet with u and make sure the sandwitch plate is steel on the w58.

w57 should have alloy sandwitch plate

its not hard to mask the difference and charge extra.

$550 is WAY to steep. I paid $175 for a W57 recently, and W58's can be had for approx $300 for early versions. I'd only pay $550 if it was a late model W58 (ie Mk4 Supra).

$550 is standard importer/wrecker price for W58. but they come with warranty.

if its a private sale. talk him down.

i bet there has been a lot of toyota box rip offs in the past with unsuspecting holden/ford/mazda owners who have paid w58 prices for w55's and 57's

I just went to the local wreckers and asked for an RA60 Celica 5-speed. These things are pretty common so you can usually get them cheap... it's important to shop around though, some wreckers will try to rip you off!

ha...micheal wanted 480 for w57 and 600 for w58. from the 1G...i queried him about the markIV w58 and he reckons it would cost over $1500 Laughing

salisbury wreckers had an ra60 with 3 month warranty...snapped that up for $250 Very Happy

thanks norbie & rob_ra40
