Ra65 engine mod/conversion help Thu, 05 February 2004 10:03 Go to next message
Hi all,

Basically I want more power but don't want forced induction and unsure weather I should modify the 22r or transplant a new N/A engine. A mechanic has told me that the 22r doesn't respond with to modification and it would be costly to modify it. Also I’m unsure how a 1ggeu would affect handling and under the impression that a 3sge transplant would be costly. I would like to stay with EFI as well. I will have about $3-4k at my disposal for this project but not facilities to do the major work myself so I’ll have to get a shop to do most of the work. Any suggestion or opinions are welcome.

Thanks

on ebay there is a 22r Turbo manifold with a ct20 turbo for like $300. But i would say to go with the 1ggeu, that is the way im going, as it seams it is a easy mod. i would like to go 1ggtu but since im young it would be to much on insurance

Will the 1uz fit easily? How much heavier it the 1uz compared to the 22r. Extra power is great but I don't want a lead tipped arrow. What does the engines weigh anyway (22r,1ggeu,1uzfe)

using the search function for 1 minute finds:

1uz-fe weighs in at a touch over 200kgs, with everything attached (ps, aircon, sump)
1g-gte weighs in at slightly *less* than a 22R (but remember your weight distribution will still be more forward of the front wheels)
1g-geu will be even less

careful what u suggest. 1UZ on that budget will be hard to do.

1G-GE is cheapest n/a option.

Well the 22r in it now has 286000 km on the clock, burns a bit of oil and pings above 3500-4000 rpm. And there’s a tiny bit of blow by. And I would like more power I think I would be happy with 140-180 hp for the moment. It will be a sleeper I hope

now it's me who's not reading the first post Razz
1uz on your budget is probably not doable (read: almost certainly not)
go the 1g-geu

listen to rob - he's smart

At least we like to let him think he is. They're right though, a 1GGE is going to be the best bang for bucks at that budget.

3 to 4 grand doesnt get u much
these days a basic engine rebuild done properly can cost up to 3000

did a lexus in a hilux few weeks ago
they said it cost around 8000 to 9000
thats for a workshopp to do
includes engine/wiring/surge tanks/pumps/mounts/bellhousing kit

y dont u want forced induction

i just did an sr20 n/a into an old ke30 (i think) corolla

so i would even think about an sr20 i know its not toyota engine but hey
all u want is good hp
but remember yr car is originally carby
to goto an efi engine means about 500 bucks for a fuel system

I'm 21, my car already has EFI. I'm not to concerned about insurance. As for why not force fed I just prefer n/a if I wanted out right hp I would go down the turbo route, just after a moderate increase over standard and down the track well set up suspension and brakes. So far it would seem the 1ggeu would be best, is there a recommended supplier of a front cut/engine and loom or doesn't it matter where I should get it.

If it's pingin g over 3 grand (I'm not an authority on this, but this probably suggests carbon build up. yes?), then you either need to start using better fuel, or retard the timing. Now. That pinging means pre-detonation. Not good for your engine or power.
