Whats the likeliness of snapping an impeller shaft on a CT20 turbo? I was driving my car one day... next day I go to turn it on and theres this terrible noise which sounded like a whipper snipper spooling up... the exhaust manifold and turbo got extremely hot in the ten odd seconds I had the car running... I have started to unbolt all the turbo and exhaust manifold bits... just wanted to know if i'm wasting my time thinking its a snapped impeller shaft... [Report message to a moderator]

I had a loose bolt at the base of my exh manifold (where joins to turbo) and a small gap on either side on the gasket. It sounded (as you put it) like a whipper snipper, and it was the gasket "chattering" back and forth. I was sure it was a stuffed turbo. Slacked all the bolts, retightened and the noise was gone. (A task much easier to type than do!). Was on an mr2 turbo, so is possibly similiiar. [Report message to a moderator]

Thats a good point... I'll try tightening up the turbo to the manifold over the weekend and see how she goes! Thanks for the advice! [Report message to a moderator]
