is it just me or do the ra23 handbreaks suck? only time it will do anything is if i'm turning on dirt and pull it on, i love my handbreak turns so does anyone know of a way to modify the handbreak to give it more ability to lock the back wheels?

yeah the handbrake in my 22 only locks up the rear on dirt or grass and only JUST locks up if im turning on very wet road
the only thing that comes to mind is extend the hand brake lever so u have more leverage, hence harder lockup on the wheels with the same amount of force.
but i only say that cause i dont know jack all

Thing is, every other old school toyota I've driven (corollas, coronas, xA6x celicas, etc.) with drums on the back have had pretty decent handbrakes. Can't actually remember what its like on a xa2x, but why should it be particualy nasty? Put some new linings in, and carefully adjust it, should be alright.
If you want a bad handbrake, try a bloody commodore!

The reason the hadbrake does'nt work to well is because the rear drums suck Try disabling the front brakes and take the car for a spin, the rear brakes wont lockup with the pedel either! You will need to do a rear brake conversion to get the rear to lock up real good!

Hmmm, drums are way better for lockups! One of the main reasons discs are used instead (and fade resisntance)
Check your handbrake mounts before you go pulling too hard too. Mine seems to be held on by only two of the possible four bolts in the area, and one of those captured nuts has been pulled irght through the floor (im guessing my car was rallied at some stage
grab the welder and make a new braket, i suggest. I will be

hmmmm seems to me that I have to only decent handbrake in the whole world, mine locks up really good. When I was younge and stupid late at night I used to do big long straight handbrakes before and over the top of pedestrian crossings, leaving skid marks over the white paint. I used to think it was hilarious, imagine walking up to it during the day and about to cross the road and there are two great big dirty skid marks over the white paint, well as I said that was a while ago. To get a good hand brake loosen off the adjustment all the way out at the lever end. then go the the drums, adjust both sides so that when you spin the drum it spins around maybe once, just have enough drag but not enough to lock the brakes on. while your there check the wheel cylinders and make sure they are not leaking, inside the boot also. bang the wheels back on, jump in and have a pull......on the handbrake lever...(shaking my head, some of you have sick minds). if it needs anymore adjustment just do it on the inside adjuster. Happy Handbraking hope it helps. Benny
