Hey Guys and Girls
as you probably guessed by now I'm picking up my very first Toyota soon and I am needing a bit of advice on the best way to get the thing up and running again with the least amount of effort.
The car is a RA60 with targa top in very good nick. everything standard. Its my mates car so I know what condition everything is in and how well its been serviced.
The problem is that the car has been stationary for the past 12 months. He did go and kick it over every couple of weeks but hasn't done so in the last 3 months.
I've checked and it has oil and water (no leaks*thanks god*) and they appear fine.
Just wanted to know if there is anything i can do to help bring the baby back to life again and reduce any of the problems I know cars can have if they sit for a while.
I had planned to get it home, kick it over and just let it idle for a and hour or so with no load to let everything get lubed up again.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Phil

Definitely don't do that! Letting the engine idle for extended periods is bad news. The engine has a pressurised oil system so getting everything "lubed up" should take a matter of seconds, not an hour. Those few seconds are critical though, and that's when the majority of engine wear happens, even more so when the engine has been sitting for a while and the residual film of oil has run off the major components.
If the engine has been sitting for 3 months that's not such a big deal, but if you're worried you can try cranking the engine for a few seconds before you start it.
1. Make sure the battery is well charged.
2. Ensure the engine has plenty of oil.
3. Remove all the spark plugs.
4. Disconnect and block the fuel line.
5. Squirt a bit of oil (not too much) down each of the spark plug holes.
6. Crank the engine for say 20 seconds.
7. Re-assemble the engine and start it up!

Yeah so true, if u cranked it for 20 odd seconds u would at least have some oil pressure.
Much nicer to the engine considering its been sitting 4 so long, also your best bet would be to change all fluids, plugs and filters.
whatever u do don't let it idle 4 an hour cuz u will fuck the rings and bores!!

maybe turn the engine over by hand a couple of revolutions after putting a bit of oil in the bore. just to make sure it wants to turn. and let the oil spread nice and evenly.
