Need some advice on the following for my 3sgte rebuild ..
Specifically parts info on things like:
headgasket - Ideal thicknesses , brands etc i can look at , though TRD would be preferred.
Bearings - Are gen3 3sgte bearings any better than gen2 - and do they fit in a gen2 block
Cams - reground - or aftermarket ?
Suggestions for a street motor + prices if known( ie profiles etc )
leads - Reccomendations for leads to use - What brands are better - what core thickness etc etc ..

How much boost you planning to run , I'm running 26psi boost with spiking going to over 30psi in my 165 motor , The parts I am using are ST205 pistons $382 , 205 steel head gasket $98 (both genuine Toyota ) The 205 pistons will give you a little less compresion , Gapless rings $167 from Precision Engine Parts in Melbourne , ACL bearings from Repco ,ARP head studs $190 from Rocket , If you use a steel head gasket you will need to get your block decked and head surface grind , as a steel head gasket requires very flat surfaces .

the 3sgte im getting comes with the following
JE forgies + 205 rods + ARP rod bolts , Arp head studs too
Thats the basis of the engine ..
Gasket wise i think ill go a TRD item at this stage - Cheap thru penrith toyota with the toymods discount ..
bearings i was told cant be bought off shelf until they have been removed to see what ones are required to fit the motor.
The pistons are a wee bit oversize so a Hone is in order - and the head will be de-dagged - but not ported out or polished up to any great extent - it doesnt need it ..
Im aiming to run 18 - 20PSI thru it at this stage .
Still need to know things like leads - whats a good setup to use there + cams if i go to that extent ..
Rings - ill probably see about chromoly ones to match the pistons

Bearings are a bit weird in a 3SGTE.
Toyota make 5 different bearing thicknesses for the main journals, and 3 different sizes for the rod bearings.
Toyota charge $41.83 for Crank bearings 1,2,4 and 5 EACH!!
$48.30 for crank bearing #3 (its larger than the others)
They charge $31.90 EACH for the rod bearings.
Basically you'd be up for around $800 in bearings if you go geniune.
The reason Toyota (and virtually no-one else) does this is because when they make a crank, they don't regrind it. Rather they measure the crank, and select the right sized bearings.
You can tell what sized bearings to use by reading the number stamped on the crank and the number stamped on the block (on the sump mounting edge). You add them together to get the bearing number required. My crank was 0,1,0,0,0 and my block was 2,2,2,2,2. Therefore the bearings I need are sized : 2,3,2,2,2. Get my drift???
Other manufacturers just grind the crank journals all to the same size and fit a universal bearing size. (Standard, 10, 20 etc).
Rod bearings have 3 different sizes. The number required is stamped on the side of the rod (or bottom of the rod cap, I can't remember).
So you've got a choice. Pay Toyota $800, or pay for aftermarket ones that come in the one standard size and grind your crank to suit.
I went for the latter option, rather than pay $800 for 18 strips of metal.
My bearings are a "King" brand, and cost $47 for the entire crank journal set, and $40 for the rod bearing set. Crank grinding was $50 at the local machine shop (although I had other work done at the same time, so maybe that is cheapish).
Thrust washers are also a ripoff from Toyota, go aftermarket if you need them. As are rings.. ($240 from Toyo, $76 aftermarket).
EDIT: Oh, I'd go TopGun (or Magnecor if you can afford it) for the leads. The nology type ones seem to be very poor bang for buck.
Don't forget the rest of the ignition system (dizzy cap, rotor etc) will need work as well if you are running 18psi+

the gen 3 (205) head gasket is different to ealeier ones. if you have a gen 3 head, you must use a gen 3 gasket as critical water holes dont line up. The last TRD head gasket we got was wrong!!. Make sure you get a money back gurantee from whomever. We only use King beaings in our race engines. apart from very special Clevite race series bearings, they are the only ones with a hard steel backing plate, and they are modestly priced.

The motors a gen 2 ..
its a st185 group A motor .
Ill ask the rebuilder about grinding to suit, instead of farting about with bearing 1 2 or 3
