4AGE: Big cam = hotter engine? Sat, 07 February 2004 06:39 Go to next message
Hey Ppls,

Ive just put a set of 272deg TRD cams into my small port 4age. Now when im giving it a bit the temp gauge comes up one extra bar (digi dash). It used to do this on some hot days (30deg+) but now its doing it most of the time... It does stay on this bar however so...

Is this normal?

Oh and a lot of fine tuning of timing is still to be done.

you might be leaning out... lean fuel will increase thermal temps in the chamber heating up the cooling system

Hmmm, good point... Ill have to get a A/F ratio gauge on it when I get a chance to dyno tune it.

i've noticed this to with some engines, usually the problem is incorrect tune whether it be fuel or timing related, usually timing different cams like different amounts of advance

I bought the cams from a freind second hand and paid $300.

Stage II? We dont get stages in the real world... They really were quite easy to fit. I recommend that you change the cam oil seals at the same time...

LOL, stage II, is that like EP for rotors? (or is it mild, street, extend Razz )
it all depends on how many "stages" you feell like making. i have a stage4 cam of 7 stages, but 5-7 are not streetable. if your cam maker only has 3 stages, where does that leave you?

did you change anything else at the same time? compression? timing?

i have found that with very advanced timing, high comp and the cam, temps went up, but i also have very rich mixtures... temp in the chamber is due to mixture and also peak compression pressure. with everthing else exactly the same, longer cams will give you higher peak pressures (since you are getting more air in there) and it will run a little hotter than usual, but not much.

check timing is not too much, check AFR's on either dyno, or borrow a WB. if they are ok, then just need to live with it Wink

btw, i have 4K, 10+CR, 277/284cam, so is roughly comparable to the 16V 272 cams......

also if you can, check the actual temp, either using K-type thrmocouple, or gauge... might even be worth it to fit a second gauge (or fit sensor and have gauge as temporary when you do changes)

hmm, if you were in sydney, i could organise a thermocouple, but not WB Wink... not yet Very Happy

Cya, Stewart

Heck, you can use my thermo next time you come visit, but I haven't bought a WB yet, sorry, and 'the other guy' won't loan his out for anyone other than me to tune my own car (which STILL isn't quite going!)

Ive changed the timing of the dizzy and also added some adj cam gears... Ive advaned them all to different settings and it seems to be quite reliable.

I think one thing that may be my problem is the dash im using seems to read a lost higher than the analog one...

Ill have to take you up on that offer Mr Shin, not sure if ill need that tune though... Ive got it running pretty good now ;p Did you end up speaking to your freind?
