New Crown motor kicks ass. Sat, 07 February 2004 09:21 Go to next message
How's this for a funky new conversion motor?

New range of V6s coming straight at you, with 6 speed autos. All in RWD configuration already. I'm led to believe it's an all alloy V6 with dual VVTi and direct port injection.

Important numbers for the 3GR-FSE are 188 kW (256 hp) @ 6200 rpm and 314 Nm @ 3800. That said, it has at least 280 Nm of torque from ~1500 rpm right thru to nearly 6500 rpm! And ALL of this from a 2994 cc motor. At least as good as a 1UZ!

Goodbye JZ, hello GR! Might be fun in a Celica or a Mk2 (Corona or Supra).

Clicky-clicky.

hrmm nice read

toyota have gone a little soft in the "sports car" area... havent seen anything noteworthy since the JDM RS200 altezza, and even that leaves a lot to be desired..

but their engine design team are still top notch im my opinion!

i wanna know why we dont get the chaser/tourer v in aus? its a sure commo eater and would appeal to the 4 door/turbo 6 cylinder crowd

toyota australia is playing the "safe" game ... bah

that's right.
that's because Aussies dont want high performance cars.
that's why we import thousands of them from japan every year

The govt also recognises that we dont want high performance cars, so they're happily strangling personal imports from japan, so we'll all be happy and buy a shit car

i also got a little excited reading about both the the 3grfse and the 3mzfe 3.3L v6 lately ...

until you go hunting for one in japan or the US and realise how much they cost No No No good god they are SO expensive

$1200 on a bent-over 2jzge is a BARGAIN compared to these latest vvti v6's

plus im still not sold on the modify-potential of the direct injection, nor the cost of the vvti (which youd undoubtedly hoist)

Since when has the cost of vvti been a problem? The thing makes peak torque over a huge chunk of its rev range!

What is it about direct injection that has you frazzled? I think its a perfect option, point taken it hasn't been around long enough to be perfected, but it makes a whole lot of sense.

re: vvti - im just referring to when buying the engine, youre buying a late model vvti bells-and-whistles engine that the reseller can ask a fair amount of money for... and if i were to buy one of these lines of engines, i would be dumping the vvti - and thus the money spent to acquire it would be relatively wasted

re: direct injection - its a BITCH to play with these engine's compression ratios, plus no one has done any work thus far on how you should go about porting them. its very much an unknown.

either way, in traditional performance modification terms its very hard to see where to start with these engines.

'Tis true, but it would be a folley to ignore the potential, even if it isn't properly understood (as most new technologies are initially). I was under the assumption that most direct injection engines already ran fairly high compression ratio's.

Why would you be so quick to dump the vvti, strictly speaking, why couldn't it work on a performance engine, it's very effective at what it does when working properly, so surely making it work would provide a more worthwhile result. Obviously chasing peak power they may prove a restriction (but why is that?), but surely for a real engine i.e. one that is to be used on a daily basis would benefit from having more torque and power everywhere than tuned for one spot...?
