custom dials Sat, 07 February 2004 11:04 Go to next message
I know some people here have done it at home and have heard of various techniques..

1) Take a picture put it on computer, edit it then just print it out.

But how would you fit these? how will the lighting go through? Im guessing you have to cut a hole at every 500RPM marking? can anybody who's made custom dials give some info as i plan todo my own. cheers

I'm doing one for my mates exa.

I scanned the old face, changed the colours so its white with blue writing.
I have an a3 printer so I can printin it relatively easy

the old face is clear with black paint and transclucent paint where the numbers are..
what I plan to do is to give it a reverse glow effect by using thinnners to strip the paint off the face so its clean, then give it a light sand with very fine paper so that when I have blue LEDs shining on it, the light will disperse thru the frosty plasic.
an alternative would be to make another piece out of thin perspex..
then you just glue the paper onto the plastic and trim the edges
then put it back in...

if you wanted to have the normal glow you would have to screen print black onto the plastic everywhere except for the numbers and marks, because you dont want any paint where the numbers are if you wnat them to glow.

how you can understand what im getting at...
