MX83 head unit Wed, 07 August 2002 18:25 Go to next message
I was just wondering if anyone has any details about the factory head unit found in the MX83 Cressida Grande. I read somewhere that there is an external amplifier unit in the console/dash so I was wondering if the outputs from the head unit to that amplifier were similar to preouts in aftermarket head units, and what the output is for the amp.

If I can keep the factory head unit it will be a bonus, cuz a double DIN butt-ugly cd/tape player isn't much use to any thieving bogan, and keeps the car looking like a "granny mobile" as my gf calls it.

also bear in mind you have the volume knob and some of the controls on the dash which will be useless if you remove the stock double din radio.

my mate has an mx83 - he uses the stock speakers in his GLX with a CD player which plugs into the aerial connector and a line level convertor to drive a sub woofer - it sounds great!

that said i don't know of any amplifier anywhere in the car (aside from the one in his boot powering the sub)

This is something I had thought about before too for when I can eventually afford an MX83. Best thing would be to rip out the stock unit and actually take a look at the back of it, see what plugs are there, and also look under seats etc. to see if there is an amp hiding there somewhere. That said sometimes it is possible to add pre-outs to a factory head unit.

yeah you can use a converter but been there done that take my advice and dont

id leave the system alone its quite cool but if you like you can check my set up out heaps of subs, amps x 4 mids ,midbase's heaps of tweeters single din head deck the works

they are actually a great car for acustics if you got questions though im all ears

a single din unit is ok and the controls for the original deck will fade in to the background and you wont notice they are there after a while

Yep, the head unit has an external amp bolted in behind it.
Its made by Technics and I think its 4x20 watts, I've pulled mine out as the cd player died. You should be able to tap in to the cable between to get the pre-outs for an external amp, but you will need to leave the unit installed as it also controls the satellite switches and volume control.

Hey, I've pretty much done most things to that head unit, including removing it altogether...I doco'd it for ppl trying to do the same thing....

You can also use the amplifier without the head unit with some snazzy wiring and plug a discman or something into it as well...But if you are using an aftermarket head unit, you should remove it all together...Have a look at
this.

Hope it helps even if just a little, any questions dont hesitate to contact me.
