icon5.gif  where to find a supra 6-speed? Sun, 08 February 2004 05:17 Go to next message
Hey everyone.

I live in townsville nth qld. Wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a supra gear box. Where's the right places to ask. Also approx. how much it'd cost to buy and install it into a mitsubishi mirage.

Thanks. Smile

Hmmm.

Those supra 6 speeds are hard to come by, and when you do find one, they are fairly expensive- upwards of $2500, I believe. The right places to ask are at jap import wreckers, or post a thread in our "parts wanted" section.

However, the Supra 6 speed won't go in your Mirage. The Supra is a "rear wheel drive" car, which in this case means the motor is in the front, and the driving wheels are at the back. The 6 speed gearbox is mounted to the back of the motor, and connected to the rear wheels by driveshafts and other fantastic trademarked gadgets.

Your Mirage, however, is a "front wheel drive" car. That means the motor is in the front, and drives the FRONT wheels. You cannot fit the (rather long) 6 speed Supra gearbox onto the back of your motor.

Perhaps some other guys on here may be able to suggest a 6 speed FWD (front wheel drive) gearbox to suit your Mitsubishi.

Good luck. Smile

Thanks.

But you don't have to talk to me like a child. I drive a car (with four wheels) i know how my "car" works.

I was just asking cause i don't know how "supra" parts work in relation to my car.

Thanks for the advice

IMHO, Mickie B is:

  1. 10,
  2. trolling, or
  3. both.

Now for a more helpful reply.

Your Mirage is FWD. The V160 is a RWD box. There are so many reasons why this won't work that I actually won't bother listing them.

If you really must have a 6 speed box, I suggest you try a unit that has at least the same FWD layout eg Corolla 6 speed from behind (beside?) a 20V or one of these new Sportivo 6 speed boxes. Expect this not to work without considerable effort (read money).

Some credit for the man. I'd like to see the 10 year olds you know who own cars....

The reasoning behind wanting a supra box is that i'm told they're one of the best.

I'm not here to cop shit from you guys. If i didn't have money to afford mods you think i would waste my time asking about them?

Unless you have a serious answer, please don't waste your time and mine by replying.

What is a good gearbox someone could suggest?

One also would want to know why on earth you want to go to the trouble and expense of an extra gear? This may be helpful to those trying to answer your question.

Mickie, I gave you the benefit of the doubt mate. You came on here with such a STUPID question, I was wondering whether you were joking or not- perhaps just another knobshine shitstirrer from a riceboy forum.

Instead of being harsh, I thought I'd give you the general idea. Y'know- step out in kindness to a young bloke who quite obviously doesn't know the first thing about cars (we were all there once).

I then took the time to give you a base price and suggest some places to start looking, as you asked. In the end, I cop a smartmouth gob-off. Perhaps I should have known better than to deal with a Mirage driver.

GT sensed that you seem to know a bit more than what I originally granted you, and helped much more. You didn't even read his answer properly.

Finally, if you think a v160 will fit in your mirage, YOU DON'T KNOW HOW YOUR CAR WORKS. Simple.

Here's a thought: Never take the answer that anything won't fit anything - if you come see me with ENOUGH $, I can MAKE the box fit your Mirage, but, er, you may have to get used to a few compromises:

1. The Mirage engine will suffer a loss in response due to the extra torque consumption of the V160 box

2. The Mirage will no longer be front wheel drive...

3. The Mirage will now suffer from a noticable decline in cabin space, as a result of the BLOODY GREAT GEARBOX passing through the middle of it, not to mention the new rear end. Is this likely to be a problem?

If you want to do something with your Mirage, why not consider an engine swap? A full EVO driveline, maybe a 6G71 (or whatever they're called! the 2 litre MIVEC V6), or be daring a get a Toyota engine put in there Evil or Very Mad

See? There's no need to be narky! Just give simple, honest answers... Very Happy

Thanks mrshin. That is what i'm talking about.

I don't just "want the extra gear", i was looking into it for dragging cause i heard it was one of the best and strongest. And yes, i do want to do an engine swap, and yes, i don't mind completely fucking with the car. Details please Very Happy

(sorry fellas about above. Many misunderstandings. You guys didn't get what i wanted, i thought you were being pricks to the new guy. No harm done eh?)

Go grab zoom #61, have a look at Mr. Rigoli's Hyundai. Maybe you could get something similiar done? I'm sure if you hand him the Amex, Mr. Rigoli will be quite happy to help Evil or Very Mad

Gregory Banks from Wirrumbook has done pretty much the same thing to his mirage, from what i've seen I believe he had a custom bellhouseing made from CRS, which mated the supra box to his engine. The output shaft utilising a modified yoke drove an idler shaft that transmits the drive back under the box and to what used to be the layshaft of the original box/diff assemnbly. (now fitted with full spool) As for shifter location, the major job with the box was to shorten the output shaft by 4" and modify the extension housing to suit. (for clearing wheel arch) I believe it ran an electronic solonoid systen connected to the original shifter, with an O/D switch used for selcting 6'th gear.

Various other smaller modification were made, such as a custom crossmember for the gearbox, and other misc brackets.

I'm not sure what the web site was....? anyone?
