Sand back panels, undercoat, spray how many coats your heart desires and clear...

Right???

Thats the way that I understand it...

How would you usually sand it back. Electric sander and grit paper? Undercoat=Primer doesn't it.
Cheers Again

I know a lot of ppl use Electric but you'll need paper aswell to get into the creases and harder parts...

And yeah, Primer:)

never use an electric sander
block and piece of sand paper is the wayt to do it, if you want a good finish.

remember, prep work with painting is more than half the job! the painting itself is actually relatively easy

dont use electric sanders what ever you do! it will scratch the metal then and just make more work for ya self. use like 180-240 grit (depending on what you intend to do, back to bare ect) and a block or body file so you get a smooth FLAT surface other wise it will leave the indents of ya fingers, might not look like it but on a shinny finish you'll see it.

Have you guys actually done this before? I've found a power third-sheet orbital sander an invaluable tool in my body repair.

Depends how good your panels are.. i will assume they are shit (like mine were ...) so here are the steps:

1) paint strip - try not to wipe eyes with paint striper.. not cool... but u can drip some on your friends legs when they are not watching ... very funny !

2) block with 60-80 grade then 120, get rid of all RUST

3) bog if necessary then block it off

3) wipe with cloth+water, wipe with prepwash+water then wipe with clean cloth then

4) 1 coat primer and spray a guide coat

5) block with 180 until all guide coat is off + fine fill anywhere necessary, then 180 again ... repeat step 3

6) second coat primer

7) wet+dry with 320, 600 then 800

8. repeat step 3, mask up then spray

try to do it a few days at a time, not just on weekends cuz it will take forever and u will lose motivation

good luck Cool

ps and dont use an orbital sander u lazy shit Razz

like les said, try and do it asap, some primers can/do go off and then when you go to put the first colour coat on it wont stick to the primer.

yeh iv sprayed one car, with help from a mate who works are castlemaine street and hot rod restorations (very reputable company around here) he done all the finish coat but i got it up to scratch with his help guiding me on the way, learnt a bit but i wouldnt call my self an automotive pro painter by no means Smile

The thing the spray painter told me to do is take your time with the prep, but don't do the final sand in preparation for the colour until the day before you are going to spray it as it will go funny.

Yeah i know i should of done a search but oh well everyone's been helpful. My sprinter is silver. Its gone all weird like its dried out and Its started to crack. The person who owned it before me (besides my brother) must of left it out in the sun permenantly. Also where would the best place to get paint made up for you?

It's probably the clear coat that is peeling and making your paint look crap, it's doing the same on my Celica.

megs-
sounds like your paint is crazed, where ever your paint has done this you will have to take back to metal otherwise this will return after you spray over

Just remember that everything takes longer than you think. I've probably spent about 50-60 on task hours (in the garage) for my paint job, plus sunk time in collecting materials and parts. Paint curing time is a 'more is better' thing but I'd want to leave it at least two weeks after the spray before final sanding.

I'm not sure you can just roll it into the garage on the last Friday afternoon of term and rock up at school in it two weeks later on the Monday (or Tuesday in private school) for all the girls to fuss over... mmm, high school girls... Razz

Yeah i found out that i got tests two weeks before holidays and after they are done i have an extra week of holidays. Also i knew it wouldn't be done by the first monday, so i'll probably still waiting for it to dry while school is on. Oh yeah i forgot to say. I'm not doing the full respray. There are certain panels ie boot, roof, and a few patches only. And i also want the colour to be the same as the original.

Colour matching can be quite difficult. For instance, the same base colour can be produced using different mixes of different pigments, and may look the same under certain lighting conditions but a different as black and white in different light (or dark).

Even getting the daytime match can be hard, as the paint on a fifteen to twenty year old car will have faded slightly (or more than slightly) over time. Furthermore, as the new paint and old paint age, the inconsistency in aging patterns may cause noticable differences to develop over time.

It's also difficult to graduate a repair seam into the original paintwork without it being noticeable. If you're doing it, I'd definately be doing the lot at once for consistency now and as the car ages.

Damn i new that was going to happen. I hate hearing the truth. Crying or Very Sad So you reckon do the whole thing so it minimises the risk of different paints. Damn. Thats a lot of work. I will have to think about it. Or i could just accept that the paint is crap and put up with it.
Some many questions!
Cheers

It is a lot of work, but at least you may be able to get away without a bare metal respray like I did, I had to strip EVERYTHING!

To me there is no point doing it half right, my advice would be to do it all, or don't do it at all. Smile

Yeah i'm doubting if i will do it know. Its a lot of work and time which will be spent on it. I just don't wanna start it then realise i couldn't be bothered. I wish i didn't have to go to school. If i didn't have yr12 to worry about i would definately do it.

i have to agree with the bare metal bit. i've done one panel on my celica and, its come up awesome (even sitting in undercoat) the rest of the car will be done the same way!

2 weeks solid 100% full on work and you *might* get it done. believe me when you get started, its the little things you will find along the way to slow you up = annoying.

like they say it IS all in the preparation BIG time.

and as far as the not using a sander goes - crap - i use a "mouse" and its brilliant - highly recommend it. esp in little fiddly areas like where the doors live ect - a good investment. can't comment on the 1/3 sheet sander idea but reckon that would be ok for the big stuff.

one thing i can tell you to be careful of is those rotory discs that go on your drill - IF you use one, use it slowly, and, don't concentrate on one area - as it will heat the metal up badly and potentially warp it. they are very very effective at removing surface rust (making sure you prep well after it)

Cheers. Just wondering if when you people who have done this before were helped by a few mates or completely alone?
