It isn't my fault that Toyota didn't bring Caldina's to Australia and we had to buy Mum a 1998 Liberty RX!
We picked it up last Thursday having just had it's 100k service and everything seems in order.
BUT it went through a WHOLE tank of petrol in just 3 days practically.. like it must be doing like 18ltrs/100klm or something stupid.
now of course I didn't pick this up when we were testing it. It is not blowing any unburnt petrol and there are no fuel leaks. Mum said when she was going up a steep hill (big dipper north rocks) she noticed a smell of fuel.
MY thoughts: Oxy sensor? I was talking to a mate who works at NRG and he said that they can go at about 100k (the first question he asked was if that had been done) and that can cause the economy to loose the plot completely.
Now my toyota oxy sensor is going strong 211k later.. does this make sense?
I would appreciate any help you can give or ideas you have. I have no real way of testing the darn thing at home so it looks like we may have to fork out some dosh.
and before you ask, yes, I searched MRT Rally forums and aussubaru.com forums and they suck.
and I searched google.
and i made phone calls even!

Are you sure the tank is empty/was full
Could the guage be reading badly
Is the odo reading correctly?

well it was filled up day after we bought it.
mum put like $50 in and guage is now back at the same possie where we bought it and we have done so not enough kilometres at all to warrant that.
it is bordering on ridicuolous
hey thanks for replying.. I hate 'contaminating' these lovely forums

I had a similar problem to what you are describing and it turned out to be the charcoal cannister. I have no idea if the subaru's even have one of those, or if this is even close to what the problem could be, but it never hurts to throw up ideas.
I guess you could also check the fuel tank for leaks, and have a snoop around in the boot - check the fuel lines and make sure there's no splits or anything (or wherever the tank access/fuel pump is located in the subaru).

I had a 91 liberty and it was heavier on fuel than my 1G RA28. Not quite that bad though.
If the oxy sensor is out by that much you would notice smoke on idle.
Have a look at the tank and make sure hat it is not damaged in any way. They sit pretty low at the back and mine used to scrape on everything and it was standard suspension.

WelI have it booked in at NRG in Ryde for Friday for a look over as well as a look at this problem, though it would be great to fix it now
I notice on full lock it feels kinda 'srubby' wierd. stock 15' mags stock height
like the diff ain't working 100%.. I dunno
