Bundera 1JZ Engine Conversion Finished - With Pics

Perhaps one of the more interesting conversions undertaken. I originally imported the LJ71G from Japan in August last year through prestige motorsport planning to fit a 1UZFE. I had problems getting a 1UZ here in Perth, and comparing dyno charts of the two engines I found that the 1JZ was a better proposition as it has a fatter torque curve than the 1UZ from 2000 rpm onwards.
The LJ71G comes with a 2LT (2.4 L turbo diesel CT20 i think), R151f 5 speed, landcruiser transfercase and g series diffs front and rear, the front being a hi-pinion which is different from the hilux front low-pinion.
Having an R151f I knew that the box would be strong enough to cope with the motor and being nearly identical to R154 i could use a R154 bellhousing. Little to my knowledge the R150 and R151 boxes have an input shaft length of 160mm as opposed to the R154's 190mm, meaning an R154 bellhousing would not work. Luckily Dellow make a 30mm shorter R154 bellhousing for this specific reason.
The only other problem was the original soarer sump fouling the front diff pinion flange. This was fixed quite easily be just making a new lower section out of aluminium. I also had to run a thermofan due to space restrictions and the fact that the 1JZ fan being offset would hit the chassis rail.
Just waiting to get a final tune on the haltech now, cant wait till it's all done, will be a beast offroad and on road

Celica-sue: E6X computer, JRT are tuning the computer. Ill definitely be taking it down to motorplex when tuned, you should come down and check it then, iil advise. Choice Radiators made the radiator, 54mm ADRAD core, I welded the mounting brackets and thermofan brackets. Choice also supplied me with the ADRAD intercooler core 400x500x57, I got the end tanks done by Marine Metal Fabricators in Oconnor, they also made up the sump.
CrUZsida: Car is booked in for tuning next Wednesday. It has already been up to JRT for a tune, but I had a few problems which ment they couldnt tune it so i had to take it back to fix. Currently it's running slylux's map, which is not suited very well due to him having a large single. After tuning just got to fit my aircon, make up a new front apron as i had to cut the old one to fit the intercooler and whack a tow bar on
bassaholic: I wired up my coils wrong originally. I had trigger interference causing big RPM fluctuations meaning they car couldnt be tuned. Fixed this by moving the computer earth from the chassis to the battery and shielding the trigger wires better. The cars original loom couldnt handle the output of the new 1JZ alternator, so a fuseible link had to be put inline to stop my wires smoking . And my Repco thermofan shorted, ive got a new one on and am undergoing a warranty claim on the stuffed one, must have just got a dodgy one, not wiring related. I didnt realise the fuse had blown, which caused me to drive 45 mins in peak hour on a 30 degree day with no fan, that radiator works pretty well!!
Thanks for the comments

Thanks mate - I'll give 'em a call soonish. Also, where did you get the pipe for your intake? I've tried a few workshops and exhaust places in town, but they all want a fortune for a bit of straight pipe!
Sorry for repeating myself, but that's a bloody Work of Art you have there!!! Well done.

Nice work on the raadiator - although I am intrigued why the filler and the top radiator hose where not swapped around?

Celica-Sue: The intake is 76.2x1.2WT stainless steel. I got it through work, your best bet would be an exhaust shop for sure. Stainless steel tube is expensive.
Cyber-punk: I agree the car is no oil painting, but is definitely tough!! Pretty hard to get a good looking 4WD period.
7M-Brisbane: 2 reasons, cause the 1JZ inlet and outlet are on the same side of the engine, and with the radiator inlet and outlet on the same side, the radiator has been cross flowed by baffling the end tank. This increases the efficiency a bit.
82MKII: No worries mate, still busting to get the thing running properly.
Anyone got a E6K or E6X map for a 1JZ?

Do Haltech keep some? Perhaps you'd find someone on the Performance forums Engine Management section.

Yes, engine is too long
No way I could fit an engine driven fan as there is no room at the front. When I originally trial fitted the engine i thought the rear turbo inlet pipe would hit the firewall, so I "massaged" it with a hammer. Turns out when i put it in properly there were no clearance issues at all at the back. Doesnt matter though cause I have plenty of room to pull the turbo inlet pipe off which I have already had to do once.
Towbar goes on Friday, ive been thinking about getting another muffler too, 1 doesnt seem to be enough

you saying it is too loud?
If so that is strange. Mine has a 3" mandrel exhaust from the y-pipe with no resonators and a single 3" straight through muffler and it isn't even as loud as my Holden Rodeo with a 2.5" muffler on a stock exhuast. (unless i give it a bit )

It's loud, not intolerably loud, but loud enough for me to want another muffler. Mine is 3.5" mandrel with straight through muffler, perhaps this is why it's a little loud. Put it this way, if I crack the throttle you know im coming It's only a short car too, less pipe length than a normal car.

No I could have got one, but they wanted too much money for them compared to national prices, especially Per4manz. Got my 1JZ for under $2000, warranty, 40,000 kms (so im told), couldnt get a 1UZ for under $2500. Besided I ended up realising which engine would have been easier to extract power from.

Haha, yeah it's quite odd driving with the stick at armpit level. I can shorten it by removing that bent over bit, but the throw is not that long anyway.

Yeah in 4WD it would be lower again cause im turning another 8" diff at the front. It launches pretty hard in 4WD, for some reason i feel a slight amount of torque steer when in 4wd too.

Yeah I have a couple of times, sort of feels like you leap off the ground, don't make a habit of it though. These little buggers are pretty strong, i think the first thing to go would be a driveshaft
Jag7799: Thanks mate! It goes pretty good in 4WD, only thing is you can tend to dig yourself in a hole quicker with all that powa.

Actually man, it was pretty sweet Problem is, they require a certain amount of slip between the front and rear wheels.
Anyway, it's just a thought. I wouldn't want to see you break something after putting so much effort in on the conversion! It's bloody awesome btw. I often thought about putting a 2J in the troopy!
Cheers,
Jeremy.

I don't think thats true. Ive driven 100's of kms on tarmac in 4H in Hilux's, Pajero's and Landies and never had a problem. Im pretty sure the manufacturer recommends that you travel a certain % of your km's in 4WD.
Thanks for the concern , but i dont make a habit of it, just had to try a couple of times
