Just looking for some advice on what sort of pop-up stopper software people have used and found to be the best..
(Have been going on a PC cleaning binge today, so figured i might as well look for one of these as well )
I've found a few so far that are supposedly free to try, but require a registration payment to continue usage, and I would preferably like to find a free one. Have also read some bad reports on some particular versions which made me want to seek advice from people who may use them..
So, any advice?

You could use Mozilla or NetScape 6 as a browser...
There's an option to turn off the opening of unrequested windows... Kills off all popups.
Don't install Kazaa. It installs trojans on your machine.

Best thing to do is to use a completely different browser - Opera! I've been using Opera for nearly two years now and wouldn't consider going back to Netscape, let alone IE. Opera has an option of 'no pop-ups' in it and it can easily be disabled with the F12 key. It's also got the very handy 'mouse gestures' so you don't have to click on anything to go forwards or backwards through various pages, just make a sweeping gesture and it's all done for you. It's also noticeably faster than Netscape, and considerably faster than IE. It also won't bring down the entire computer like IE often does, and when on the odd occasiona it does fall over, it'll pick up right where it left off again.

I've been using one from panicware - can't remember the URL - maybe just do a search.
That's been fine - it's free and I've been using it for over a year. It has several options for how agressive it is and gives a visual and aural signal to let you know that it's working.
Only problem is that it only works on IE not netscape.

Well yeah Kazaa sucks big time. Kazaa lite is ok. I have 2 programs to get rid of viruses etc from Kazaa. I have tried Mozilla its pretty sweet. Inbuilt downloader manager, have more that one page open in the same window etc.

I used to have a program called close popup. Worked like a charm, just ran in the tray. Didn't seem to conflict with anything, this is a while ago in win95 or 98.
Allt he other browsers like opera and shit are better but at the end of the day, they are in the same group as linux and the N64. The N64 was a vastly better machine but everyone already had Playstations and everyone was making stuff for playstations so Nintendo never had a chance. Opera, netscape, unix and Apples are vastly superior products but they fall out because everyone owns PC's and uses microsoft we do this because it is easier as everyone already uses it! viscious circle...

AOL has chosen to use NetScape 6/7 as their default browser so we should see a bit of a shift...
