Machining wheel hubs

Hey guys,
I'm curious, are there any problems with machining down a small amount of the outer lip on a front wheel hub? I've spoken to my engineer who said he didn't have a problem with it providing it didn't come too close to the wheel studs which it wont.
Others have their doubts and this is the reason I'm asking around for some second opinions.
Also, does anyone know what an MS65 Crown hub would be made from? I can take it to see someone but that requires effort
Thanks,
Nathan

Hiya JCMF,
There should be no probs, just provide me with the dimensions and I'll confirm.
The hubs are made of cast iron (probably grey at that).
Cheers

I've done mine, and I have no issues, as it's only to the same dimensions (stud pattern and hub diameter) as the Nissan hubs. So I'm kinda hoping all will be fine!

Simple. Because if it's Nissan, it's Fuli Sik, and must be good. More practically answered by saying that I wanted to use GTR rotors. I'm using UZS131 Crown hubs, played with to take different bearings, bloody huge Nascar studs, I extended the hub centre so that the wheel can be centred properly, and on with the rotor. Ain't that easy?

Sounds like what I'm doing, only to take a GTS rotor
I'm going to get longer wheelstuds, how much did it cost to get your collar (the bit to extend the hub centre) made up or did you make it yourself?
On a Crown hub, although I'm not playing with bearings

The 297mm rotor and Nissan caliper fit nicely onto the RA60 hub/strut, and the bonus is the caliper bolt holes line up, you just need a spacer plate between the caliper and strut. All the stuff I did myself, and I've got a couple of RA60 hubs I chewed the outside off of in the name of experimentation. I did the centres myself too, the many benefits of having a lathe I'm not quite sure how well the MS65 hub lines up, it might be even better, I'd have to get one and see

Mr Shin,
Sounds like your doing it the hard way with some of your stuff.
JCMF, you can get longer studs either from Toyota (8mm longer than std MA61 for $7.00 each) or use the 'Nice Products' ones that are 73mm in total length for $5.50 each
The catalogue link for the Nice Products ones is ;
http://www.niceproducts.com.au/cat/LongStuds-0703. pdf
Either way, they fit straight in !!!
Cheers

Thanks for the heads up mate, I knew about the nice products ones, I might check see what trade price for the Toyota ones are (yay for my mechanic! )
What rotors are they mrshin? The only 297mm rotor I see for the Skylines is a rear one, did you mean the 296x32mm one?

Oh, and what calipers are you using dude? GTR ones, or the other Nissan 4-spot (the R32 Skyline, 300ZX, S14 Silvia...etc)?

Ack, close enough, hang me for 1mm! R33 GTS25t are the rotors I meant. The calipers I'm using are the same ones, which are different to the S14 ones however

Machine them, let them rust up a little, rub some grease and brake dust into them and let them sit for a further week. Who's going to know?

That's kind of what I did... 'accidently' left them out on the concrete overnight, gave it a quick rub with emery, bingo

I was planning to clean them up and paint them like the ones on the site, externally they're going to *look* fine, I just want to make sure it's alright to do!

Would you have any info on the spacers and stuff you're using, my MA61 struts are likely to be very similar to what you used

Are these the calipers you used? http://www.japimportspares.com.au/
Or can they not take the same width disc as you used?
