Yeah, I remember back when I got my P's (8 years ago i think?)the test wasnt exactly comprehensive.
And your open license just comes in the mail ... there's no mention of what different about it ... maybe thats why some people still persist on doing 80 in the 100 kmh zone!
Seriously tho, I dont think they have the resources, and the onus is on you to learn all the material before the test (just like a normal exam). Why dont they have the resources ... well, the government dont make much off fuel excise, speeding/parking/defect tickets now do they ..... (can of worms)

yeah and considering you now have to pay like $25 for a learners book, pay to do a COMPUTER test and then pay for your license and also pay extra for the book you need on your l's to fill out the hours driven, where is all this money going?
i can only say one thing and that is i better get a job with the RTA as i bet they will be having one kick arse christmas party!!!!! considering all the money they are making.

You don't need to buy a learners book!! it doesn't cost anything to do your learner test and they're just multiple choice so just wing it!! that's what I did (this is before they charged for the books) it only took me 2 goes to get it!!

funny how we all know what has to be done, but for some reason the govt wont do it.
I must agree, the 3 year P's was a step in the right direction, but I still think (read: know) that thousands upon thousands of people who shouldn't be allowed to drive are still going to be getting their lisences.

testing system should be moddeled off germany's road rules, to get their learners they have to do a 100 question exam, and they are only allowed 2 mistakes throughout the whole thing, i also hear that the provisional period lasts much longer, and the actuall driving test is rather hard.....
suppose they have to be carfull considering they have auto barns... (spelling?)

yes many european countries employ a similar scheme to that we have for motor bike licenses. i know in danmark theres no L plates as such but a long training course and the licensing is very expensive... seems to work for them.

The German system requires them to keep a logbook. They have to drive at least a certain amount of kilometres all in different conditions. Plus they have to do a certain amount of hours with a qualified instructor.
It costs about $2000 for them to get a licence. I believe that's a better system. It's also social engineering... Because it's so hard to get a licence, the Germans think that a licence is something to be proud of. Australians just think it's their right to be able to drive on the road.
Having done an advanced driving course, I was completely shocked at how bad the average Australian driver was. I spent all day bored 'coz it was so easy whilst everyone else (from Mums to other car hoons) lost control of their car at least once. Granted my suspension setup isn't in the same league as your average Excel, but still...
I drive like a maniac, but I'm actually more scared of someone else hitting me than I am of losing control of my car.

there's a one word reason why the licensing system will never be revised to make the standard for drivers higher in this country, and that is "revunue".
if you make it harder for Mr and Mrs Joe Average to get a license, you will cut down on the number of people who are driving right? this means less income to the industry from car sales, parts sales, repairs, and accessories. add to this the lost govt income from a reduced number of registrations, fines, fuel excises and tolls, and we're talking likely a billion dollars a year in money the goverment won't have the use of.
parts and servicing costs would go through the roof,as the number of clients would reduce, yet the businesses would still have to try and keep the doors open to service those left.
the upside from our point of view of less potential accidents due to a higher standard of awareness, better traffic flows due to both lower numbers of vehicles, and more skilled people piloting them are trivial matters to the powers that be. as long as we're not wiping ourselves out on a grand scale, and everyone eventually gets where they're going, that's good enough in their mind.
nothing we say will change this,as the economics of it alone cancel out any safety concerns. sad,but true.
Justin...

If they were just a liberal at give them to any tom dick and harry and saying their a good driver, they should be less liberal taking them off high skilled and qualified drivers such as myself... the court system isn't much better, if not worse!! I would love to show the bastard who took my license away a video of how stupid some drivers are and let him him say they're not "dangerous to the public"... the whole lot makes me wonder some days.

I'm with max here for all my crazy driving, I have the reflexes and ability to match it. The closest I ever come to accidents are usually when I'm oging the speed limit and people nearly turn into me, or merge lanes into me, or tailgate
what did you lose your lisence for johnny?
