Bosch Coil with ballast resistor...

Hi guys,
Well just got myself a Bosch GT40RT transformer ignition coil
today and i seem to have run into a bit of a problem...
It says that the coil needs to b used in conjunction with a ballast resistor.
Did the Aus Spec ae86 come with a ballast resistor or do i need to install one?
If so what type of ballast resistor?
If i knew i was going to run into a problem like this i would have got the GT40R and just slapped it in!!
Any info is much appreciated!
thanks
Ryan

the r in gt40 stands for
use with a resisotr
u need a gt40 if u want to run no resistor
unless things have changed over past 5 yrs
its been awhile sine ive bought coils

Depends what engine you're using - if you're using a 4AC with stocky point ignition( ), then yup, there's a resistor there.

You can just get rid of the resistor and use a gt40. Just remove the res and wire direct to coil. I've done this in more things than I care to remember without porblems. Just sends 12 volts to coil instead of 8 (which some get fed at startup anyway).

GT40 or GT40R??
do not use these GT40 coils with elec ignition. they will die.
i give them about two weeks with the jaycar HEi kit (well didn't give but thats what they take )
Cya, Stewart
ps, they are fine for points tho, they just can't deal with the higher dwell of elec.

Stewart, Can you elaborate on how it's affected by increased dwell? No disbelieving you, just furthering my ed. As I understand, the resistor allows 8 volts to the coil (why?) but checking a 5me elec setup I have here with resistor it bypasses at startup and feeds 12v.
Best prior experience I've had is on range rovers which don't have a resistor but a resistive wire as the feed to the coil. This burns out and we just replaced the wire with std and ran a non resistive coil, elec or points.
Pls explain
thanks

Reduced dwell (longer charge time) can possibly cause a non-suitable coil to overheat and die.
Most ballast restitors drop 6-8V to the coil during running, again, to stop overheating.
It gets bypassed at startup, supplying 12V to allow for easier cold-starts (rich mixtures).
