1jzgte 5 speed -> VN ('91 holden ute)

has anyone ever attemped a conversion from a v8 to a straight 6?
My main concern is the lenght of the engine, and obviously not fitting into the engine bay..
I'm kind of hoping someone might have specs on the length of the actual 1jz.. im also chasing the length of the 304.
I bought the halfcut this morning, I'm getting the ute tomorrow, its going to the shop next week to have the cross members done, god willing.
someone help me, im worried it wont fit :/

yep, common
folks also put the rb30et and the rb2x variants in them
so you'll be fine.
the engine bay on the vn onwards is pretty cavernous anyway!

If you want to be a slackarse and use a Nissan RB 6, bolt in a VL crossmember and the fabrication is then done

I don't think a VL crossmember will bolt into a VN
Im pretty sure there are a few early commodores running around with 1J's, id say the VN would have an even larger engine bay. Definitely an interesting conversion, will be the smoothest VN ute around.

standard the ute had 165kw, now its going to have "208kw" (japanese law thing), then add a haltech system.. so yeah, should haul.
lots of people are saying "what the" when i tell them, they keep telling me to leave the 304 in it, but meh.
The 1jz will go harder, and its unique.
I'm also offing the 304 with 5 speed box for the same price i paid for the 1jz halfcut, so all in all its not too bad

250 kW 1JZ = Cheap and easy
250 kW 304 = Not so easy, not so cheap
Should go pretty darn hard, it makes me laugh that you can buy a 1JZ manual halfcut for the same price as you can sell your 304 and 5 speed BTW, how many km's does the 304 have? Probably alot more than the 1JZ.

90,000k's on the 1jz $3800 - 1992 model

a VL engine crossmember 100% bolts into a VN.
hence why the rb2x series motors go in very easy - only custom gearbox crossmember required.

Well there you go, Holden dont really make a habit of updating things very often do they. Would a VL crossmember bolt into a VS?

How similar are the struts and brakes between VK, VL, VN, VR etc?

almost identical up to the VP, the VR onwards changed dramatically with a hub style setup that the rotor bolts to, whereas the earlier ones VB-VP the hub is integral to the rotor.
why for you ask?
i know you can use the struts from a VS on a VB a dude is doing this now the control arms are the same (cast alloy on VS) and Z bar mount points are also different but the only issue is the strut top bearing plate (which you could make a custom one if it bothers you that much.
with the brakes the caliper mounting holes didn't change - therefore if you're keen with a hub adaptor you can fit VX rotors and calipers onto your VB. you can fit them to (i think VR) and VS using a special rotor from DBA for this purpose, otherwise you need the adapter. the VT onwards use a twin piston sliding caliper design, then VN V8 and VL turbo have a single pot alloy finned caliper which is also OK, the std commodore brakes from VB on are pretty dismal.
if you're going the 1J option, use the VT calipers. get yourself a pair of VS struts, use the custom DBA rotors and get a top bearing plate made to suit the top of the strut. i can help you here with bits and pieces let me know.

Best part is that most of the people you say this to will go 'nah mate, it's a 308, no such thing as a 304...' You'd be amazed how many times I've heard this said! I'll be silly enough to speak up and remind them the 308 died with the VH, and get 'nah, bullsh!t mate, 308. And that Chev thing in them new ones is a 350 smallblock'. Funniest part is, the GEN3 DOES displace 350 cubes!
Plus: It'll be the first VN to ever idle on the correct number of cylinders!

Grega: Just curious, remember they looked pretty similar thats all.
BTW the 308 ended in the VK model not the VH. However the later VK's had 304's
