Oil to use in 4AGE with 200k clicks

I wanted to know if anybody has used the oil they say is for "older engines" (there's one by Shell and i think valvoline). Do these accelerate the wear of the engine, yet stop it blowing smoke. I usually use 20W-50 Shell helix and change every 5k. The engine does use a little b/w oil changes, was wondering if the older engine oil may stop this. Would you want to use higher viscosity than the 20W-50 or will this deteriorate the engine quicker?
Ages ago my dad used stop smoke in his old 929 s/w and the engine started going downhill big time was wondering whether this type of oil is essentially the same thing.
Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Anybody used that older engine oil with success? It says some stuff about dispersants and other crap on the bottle.

my SX with a 4age has 264000kms on it and i use Castrol GTX magnatec or GTX3, these are thinner oils (ie 10w40, 15w 40) which are more suited to a mulitpoint engine...i've been told at an auto shop this is what a 4age should be using...
it dont blow smoke nor use any oil...
i dont consider 200000 as high kms, considering the age of the car, and as long as the engine has been treated right and the correct measures in maintenence are taken you will get alot more kms out of your engine....my opinion anyway, im no expert lol
hope that helps anyhow

Man your SX has done a few - lucky these cars keep going. I think I might be better replacing valve stem seals and using the thinner stuff as you say, to reduce oil consumption. Direct acting cams will make this a bit of a prick I guess, the one time you would rather rockers. I'll attack this job when I'm ambitious. I think the rings are OK as compression was really high (hopefully not due to carbon buildup ).
I just bought a 4AFE powered AE94 for my gf (helped her pick one I should say) with 200k on it so I'm hoping these are robust motors also. Anybody know how they compare to a 4AGE in terms of longelivity? Cant complain about my GE

Penrite HPR30 will work good in your engine.

normally its the stem seals on 4AGE's that chop out - i've seen plenty of 4AGE's pulled down now and, the bores are pristine - no issues there (can still see hone marks on some of em)
good chance your oil consumption issues are stem seals, maybe go to a wrecker and get a spare head, get it recoed so you can swap it over in a weekend? also remember VRS kit too (speak to meridian motorsport they have these for all 4AGE's)
as far as oil goes, that magnatec stuff is good (its going in my VT) but my 100kw motor will use mobil 1.

Thanks for the responses. Does anybody know what it would cost to recon a 4AGE head. A VRS kit is that just the head gasket etc. If your going to this much trouble it it worth dropping the sump & replacing big end bearings, or are these usually ok?
Recoing the head sounds like it would be the best part of a grand installed. Am I not better going down to SSS and getting an import motor for $750, new timing belt and seals, or could this motor be worse than mine anyway? Better the devil you know or some s**t.
ortahor - its good to know the 4AFEs are strong motors. This one's an auto which zaps a few kw, but the manuals aren't too slow...I was impressed. The 4AF carby autos I test drove weren't the best - but I guess it's how they've been tuned etc.

you've answered your own question there.
better the devil you know. you might go and get a 100kw motor from SSS and it may be worse than yours!
depends what you can do shop around on here or twincam and find someone with a 100kw head, get a VRS kit, send the head away get it recoed with new stem seals get it cleaned up a bit - get the machinist to setup the shims again too (unless you're keen and have access to alot of shims) and put it all back together yourself? its not a hard job you just need to think clearly through whats gotta be done.
it makes it much harder if its a daily driver though.

My motor in the Camry 3SFE has done 363,000ks at the moment, and rebuilt at 300,000 , i recommend Penrite HPR40 20w/70 ( I have tried SHELL, VALVOLINE, CALTEX and many others coming in second place for me is Penzoil, but the best in my opinion for high mileage cars is Penrite HPR40 . Whatever you do dont go any lower than 20w/50 because you will screw up your high mileage engine. The good thing about Penrite oils is its designed for Australian conditions ie. Bloody hot hehe, specially lately in Sydney with temps in the 40's .
