brake master cylinder enlarging

For those interested in cylinder enlarging.
I have probably rung every brake place in Newcastle trying to find someone to enlarge a TA22 13/16 2 bolt master cylinder to 15/16. Most places said it couldn't be done or that pistons were not available. I knew it was possible disscusion on these forums. Then my mechanic suggest Halray Brake Reconditioning in Lismore. If you visit their website you will discover that they are the experts in brake and clutch cylinder re-sleeving and have actually designed and patented their own equipment to do this. For about $150 they are boring mine to 15/16, making up a custom piston and fitting new seals.

everything is stock, booster and master, except the master is now 15/16in bore size. the pedal feels unreal. really solid, firm and just as good as you could expect from a factory setup!! i don't knoww hat else to say. i was hoping to get a 1inch rebore, but with no suitable piston available without custom machining one up, 15/16 was the next best option. i was a bit hesatent at first, but went with it anyway. i gotta say that i wouldn't want the pedal any more firm than it is now!!!!

isnt there a suitable replacement.. I think it was a tercel or something like that, I'm not a 22 man but I remember people talking about it. maybe rod would be the man to ask,
I know the replacement is one which has one resevoir.

the tercel unit is a replacement, and it is quite neat with it's top mounted single reservour, but the bore size is no bigger. so to cut a long story short, there is not bigger bolt on option for the TA22, and believe me, i've done the run around.
sure with correct modifications, others can be made to fit, but for the same effort, why not just modifiy the existing one??? and the added bonus is that the brake lines don't have to be modified. not that it's a huge problem to do so, why not just leave it as it is???

Has the Tercel item got a 16/15 bore? I like the idea of having the top mounted reservour!

Cool1, you must have misread my post. i said that the tercell master cylinder's ONLY advantage was the top mounted reservoir. internally they are the bore same size as the TA22 master. i suppose that if you picked one up cheap you could have it modified much like i had my TA22 master cylinder modified out to 15/16 inch...

Ahhhh ok thanks mate. I might see if I can find one!
While we're on the brake subject, has anyone tried removing the booster? I know Kangz was doing this, but he has gone now!

oops, i guess the miss understanding is going both ways today.
i'm no expert with this, but my reccomendation would be for a road car to leave the booster on the car. however if you decided to delete it from your setup, it would not be too hard to setup.
if you made up a plate to block off the booster hole and mounted the master clyinder to that plate and make up a rod from the pedal. i suppose it would take a bit of stuffing around to get right, but the concept is easy. hey and while you're at it, set up twin master cylinders with bias adjustable rod between them for front and read!!! that would be very sweet!!!

I was just thinking that removing the booster would give a much firmer sporty feel! Twin master cylinders would be real sweet

hmmm. questions questions. okies, well, am wondering if a booster from a ke55 would fit on the ta22? if so, am then wondering if the same master cylinder from the ke55 would fit on the ta22 - if so, i think the master cylinder on the ke55 and vc onwards commodores are the same pattern, so, theory is a commodore 1" master from lets say a vn 5 litre might be able to bolt up to a booster from a ke55? just a thought.....????
i havent tried this next trip to the wreckers i'll see what i can find tho...

grega, ummmm, from memory, the comoodore stud pattern may be the same or similar, but you may or may not know that the bolts on the commodore masters are not horizontal. they are on a diagonal. and from memory, the toyota bolts are horizontal. if so then you couldn't mount the master cylinder tilted over, especially one with a top reservoir. correct me if i'm wrong.

Hi, I am pretty new to this subject. Not sure what's all that. But just sound like great. Please excuse my silly question. So what's master cylinder? What's all those 15/16 stand for?? And also do you guys know any one in sydney doing this cylinder enlarging work?? I have a AE86, planning to get a engine conversion. So brake upgrade is a must. Thanks for any help.

hmm. I fitted a TE71 item (13/16) to replace my KE35 (12/16)....... I thought there was a bigger replacement for our 2 bolt systems....rather then resleeving.

Right , do you's all know that fitting larger bore master cylinders will decrease your braking preasure to the wheels , The TA22 has not got good brakes to start with as the booster is to small and the only way to get highter preasure to the wheels is to decrease the size of the master cylinder bore or increase the bores of the wheel cylinders and calipers , I fitted a tandem master cylinder of a corola ( smaller bore 3/4" ) to my TA22 and front struts and disks from a RA40 which has larger bore and pistons than the TA22 , This improved the braking on the TA22 by heaps , as for pedal feel , I still have near full pedal , It's no good having a full hard pedal and not being able to stop , It's better to have a little lower pedal hight and good braking .

Well if anyone gets round to posting names and phone numbers of any places in Melb. that do it, I'd be much appreciative. If you want to get an idea of running without the booster, pull the hose off of it and plug it up, go for a drive - its doable, just be careful till you get used to it. Oh, and don't go running over any kiddies
On mine the pedal is just too damned soft with the Mazda 4 pots in there, I'm sure a 15/16 would fix things up quite nicely, oh, and some new pads as well also wouldn't hurt, damned cheap arse things that came with the calipers don't work too good and make a filthy mess of the wheels...
