Hi,I live in Sydney, I've got a Oz spec AE86 Sprinter which comes with rear drum brakes. Is there any one who can tell me how and where to get a pair of rear disk brake for my AE86?? (Better standard ones) And also What's the best upgrade for AE86's front brake?? Can any other model of Toyota's front brakes or Rear brakes bolt on to the AE86?? Thanks for any one who can help me.....

Well, first of all, do you REALLY want discs on the back of your car? Do you ever actually find that the rear brakes are damned hot, smoking, or even on fire? Thing is, stocky ae86 rear discs aren't (in my opinion) overly impressive things. They suck for handbrake turns, and the pads in them are about the size of a termites loungeroom. By the time you'd have your rear drums good and hot, the front discs would be considered an alternative for the sun.
As for front brakes, read a few other posts, this ones been discussed before...

Still, I prefer discs at the back ... look better at the very least rather than big cannisters. To each their own I guess ...
I just ordered my Jap spec rear diff from SSS Automotives in Sydney on Tues for $800 AUD. It's an open diff so it doesn't have the LSD but at least it has the disc brakes.
Call Adelaide Jap Dismantlers ... they have a Sprinter rear diff with LSD but I didn't buy it cause the left hand caliper was missing. They wanted $1,300 AUD for it. This would be good if you intend installing different disc brakes on the back. Tell Bob I sent you. Email is: adeljap@cobweb.com.au
I know that Toyospares in Melbourne is expecting a similar unit in 2 weeks but someone's already placed an order for it. They're asking $2,200 AUD ... Still, their email is: toyospares@bigpond.com
All other major wreckers didn't have it & said it's pretty much non-existent in Japan nowadays. As such, the prices are going up.
Best advice is to look in those Hot 4s magazines & ring up the interstate wreckers. You may come across some which may even laugh straight in your face.
Then it's just a matter of looking for replacement pads (hence my recent post)... ^_^
Good luck with your search though. Cheers!

damn. why not use T18 (TE7x) diffs?. These are the same size and have rear discs that i'm aware of. All mounts would be the same. Or, for that sorta money ($800), I reckon i could get an F series diff with discs modified with leaf mounts for my KE35.... man you guys pay a lot of money for stuff.

T18 rear has drums If you like the *look* of discs, could always go the the extent of a *certain nameless commodore owner* who got 2 steel pizza trays and polished them, along with painting up some gutted calipers...
The bloody cash you've gotta pay for an ae86 LSD rear end these days is beyond belief. Why bother when you can get something stronger for less $, I reckon anyways. Even an open one with discs, $800? crikeys! I could get one of the old ones from up the backyard, adapt some big arse discs onto it and sell it for $800... now theres an idea

LOL T-18 with rear disks!!!
MrShin what would be a good replacement then with disks??? Bearing in mind the ease of installation with reguard to hooking up the standard Oz sprinter suspension components and also the tailshaft. Thanks dude! Adrian!

On mine I changed the whole rear end to a Borg Warner 78 from a HSV clubsport/nissan skyline, which came with its own discs which aren't exactly massive at 260mm solid. I did mine for the diff swap though (read about it on other posts), not the brakes. Put plainly, the disc handbrake that I got now is absolutely woeful for handbrake turns (can only manage it on really greasy or loose surface now), but does the job reasonably of holding the car on a hill. I don't mind this, as I wanted to keep myself from doing handbrake turns in this car (I've got other cars for dirt roads!), but as I said I didn't swap the rear end for the sake of better brakes, but then again I suppose it does look a bit better to look through the back wheels and see something shining back If you like a bit of handbrake action, then leave what works alone. If you manage to toast the drums regularly, then replace them.
To me $800 for an open diff with discs and the tiniest looking calipers man has ever known seems a bit excessive, but each to their own, and may we each be proud of what we do.

Speaking of which, what does the handbrake on a disc rear AE86 work like? I haven't actually driven one...
There are SOME cars out there with disc handbrakes that can still slide it round like a cat on a clothesline, is the ae86 one of them?

Quite true Mrshin ... Each to their own. I know $800 is a lot of money to pay for a diff but then I've got heaps of $$$ to burn and I'm not really limited to a budget of any sort. It's also the going market rate according to all wreckers I've spoken to thus far.
Still, Sprinter diffs are just so hard to find these days (just try calling around ... we're no longer in the 80's) & my engine conversion date is planned in a fortnight so it's more a case of what I can get now before she goes under the knife. Apparently the Jap spec 4AGE engine and rear diff drive shaft connectors are a different size to the Aussie Sprinter so doing this would at least make both ends the same size?
I'll look at getting an aftermarket LSD later but I can at least take comfort in knowing the rear diff will be a perfect fit and when it comes round to selling the car (if ever ... the Lord forbid) I'll have an AE86 that may be considered by most (except the purists) as a Jap spec model.
Still, I'm just wondering who'd shell out $2,200 for a 15-19 yr old rear diff (even if it has LSD). That's where I draw my limit and the guy must be a fanatic or lunatic!
Cheers all.

Well I hope the r31 diff is good for handbrake turns because I do them all the time in my aus spec ae86 open centre. Not on the public but in sanctioned events. The durms work great for handbrakes on dry bitumen. Tyres don't like it though. Funny that.

I wish I had $$$ to burn. I have enough trouble paying for these club events.

Hey Mrshin,
What did you have to do w.r.t the tailshaft with the borgwarner conversion. My diff (from skyline) is currently being bracketed now and i'll be getting it back next week.
Cheers.

I got a new single piece tailshaft made, althoguh I may need to replace that anyway for the new gearbox - if I can't use my shaft, maybe it'd be better used by you than cutting it up! What car and gearbox are you putting yours in?
