What do you recommend for a cheap daily driver?

Hello, just seeking some advice.
I am looking for a cheap, economical, stock standard daily driver as my second car.
I am after something with a good interior and exterior with no or minimal rust.
It must have air conditioning that works with an engine that runs well. It can be manual or auto, front or rear wheel drive. I'd also prefer a small to medium size car.
What should I look for from $0 to $1500? It can be anything.

A car with no rust, with air-con, with great interior exterior for ONLY $1500, i don't think so. But then again, you can buy an early 80's model front wheel drive corolla as a fair few were sold with air con, but whether you'll find an imac one for that price is pushing the envelope.

i know its not a small-medium car but i rekon a xe falcon on gas would be an option.$1500 will buy you the best one in the universe!!!nobody will steal it,nobody will try to race you,the cops will feel sorry for you.also put a jim beam sticker on the back window and everybody will be scared of you.

That's a good idea mate, but i'd prefer petrol only, and a 6 cylinder is a bit much. I'd also prefer a smaller car.
I was thinking Ford Laser, TX5, or a Toyota with a/c.

get urself an AE82 corolla, sure the aircon isnt worth using unless its over 35 or so, but they are reliable, and the 4ac will be fine for getting u around, much better than other FWD cars of the same era.
i picked up a really nice one for $1100 last year, then i put it into a wall on the gorge... but thats another story..

I guess It might be worth getting one from Sydney through friends that are second hand dealers. I think I could get one cost price and then put it on the train over here.
I wonder how much that would cost?

if you were willing to put in a few more grand, i would recommend something like a 4th gen celica SX , nice 2.0L engine putting out 103kw , a/c and power everything. looks good on the outside and inside.

re falcons - anything EF upwards is ok - anything below - is crud ..
Guaranteed by now that the firewall will have rusted so every rainstorm you have will end up getting your feet wet!
Also the doors sad , the bumpers sag or fall off , But outside of that if you want a hard to kill drivetrain , and handling of a large Container freighter - by all means get a falcon !
( and this is from a person who likes em to some extent )
best bet - ae82 corolla or a Ke series laser ( 1986 - 1989 )..Cheap cheerful , reliable + plentiful, and if kept maintained will last pretty well

Holden Novas only seem to be a little cheaper than Corollas, according to carpoint.com. Seem like you'll save like... $20-$200, and that could just be difference in the condition of the car. I would go for something like this if you want something dirt cheap, or this if you want something that isn't totaly gutless.

If you might be able to get a first gen Camry (the liftback model), there is a decent chance of finding one with A/C.

holden novas weren't around during the ae82 shape - they started in 1989 with the intro of the ae92s and were the exact same car. Early Camry 84/85 aren't bad cars (we used to have one with a/c, p/steer/ pwindows) but if you can get a car running on unleaded (86 on) I would. But I guess that will be pushing it for $1500. The chance of getting a/c that works in a car for 1.5k is minimal - I'd just lookk for a genuine car that won't cost you too much to run. good luck

I resent that , but then again, this is my biasing coming to the fore (I actually have 5 Falcons/Fairlanes at the moment)! My daily driver is a 1972 Falcon, that I can't kill (not that I try to either mind you), cheap to service and tune, but poor to moderate on fuel. Having said that I can comfortably fit five people in while towing the car trailer fully loaded, and the esky in the boot for a track day anywhere!
I'll also support any Corolla that fits your requirements, and also Ford Lasers, my sister was given a KA 2 door for free last month, with ice cold aircon and good tyres to boot. It will be registered this week!
