Ive been with Optus for a few years now and havnt had any problems, apart from the occasional drop out. Their new plans seem to be well worth it.

i think you will find that telstra's unlimited plan is something along the lines of 12 gig then slowdown, the same as optus, but i think telstra caps their uploads all the time too

optus - have always been stable except during sever storms - usually the phones dropped out but cable kept going
is nice that they don't extort money from you for going over your limit.
odd how telstra have finally started doing this?
see <http://www.whirlpool.net.au/> for reviews/opinion
also, are you thinking of cable modem or ADSL?
cable speeds vary depending on load in the local LAN, upload is dictated by the cable system - anywhere from 12-50 kbs. where i am (Kenmore Qld) download is between 300-500 kbs, depnding on speed of host not optus or me.
ADSL has higher uploads- but downstream usually cannot match cable. tho there are newer deadls coming in with 512kbs speeds.

optus - rolling limits? - they have a cumulative total data use (up + down) for the month - once you hit it, speeds drop to dailup equiv.
if you hammer the local LAN they might suspend you - there's no daily limit as far is i know
check that your modem will work on their network - differnet firmware/code may limit them to one network.
fwiw: i grabbed 4 disk images over one night last week with bittorrent (not all full images, about 1.2 Gbytes in total) and all i did was run into my 3Gb monthly limit (which during the last two months has been doubled for everyone)
all we got was an email saying the above...

telstra have a 10Gb limit and then they *MAY* cap you down to 64kbps (8k/s)... i say may because at the moment they are not doing it, some people are getting 100Gb+ per month. That 10Gb includes everything you upload AND download, but they also have a list of sites you can download from for free (which optus dont have)
just keep in mind that if you go with telstra you are locked into a 24 month contract. also note that you may have to deal with telstra tech support (can you speak the same language as monkeys?)
dont know much about the optus plans (as you guessed, i'm with telstra), but you should be able to find all the info you need at www.whirlpool.net.au, like someone said above.

yes - but arn't you paying extra by-the-Mb for every bit of traffic over your limit (except for stuff from their 'free' sites)?

i think the optus contracts are long too - even more so when you've bundled phone+cabeltv...

actually, i think the name of the language is fucking moron and optus helplessdesk have quite of few people from that land too...
and if you're from optus - sorry but your ITkids don't know jackshit.

I have friends who swear that when they were with Telstra they had frequent problems... When they changed (and they all did eventually) they have had nothing negative to say.
I have only just recently got cable so I have looked into it all and asked lots of questions.
I stand by my OPTUS recommendation.

do you mean cable/DSL providers?
try <www.whirlpool.net.au>
or google
should be manditory reading/subscription for new cable users.
also, i recommend Optus if you're going cable - if you cna provide you own IT support, then all you need is astable network infrastructure, and that's what we've had for nearly 2 years.

a guy at my work was going to go with them but already had foxtel cabletv so he stayed telstra BP. they're WA based but are doing really well - neato and fast ADSL lines - even tho they use telstra for connectivity - makes you wonder how much profit telstra's making out of it's own ADSL - seeing how much cheaper the competition is.

OPTUS BY FAR
I have people in the area who have telstra cable and optus by far are the stand outs, and the ones who I have
only ONCE in my like 2 years has there been a problem. They don't cap download speeds either (telstra does) though the do cap upload (128k - plenty for gaming)
I have friends who rue the day they signed with telstra, inconsistent errors, terrible mail server issues recently also..
Optus are also cheap, and who the heck is going to download 12gb every month?

sorry cory, i meant to say if you work for optus , i'm sorry but your ITkids don't know jackshit ...
good to note that telstra are moving away from outright extortion (the over-the-limit fee) and resorting to more business-like ways of extracting extra cash from their clients...

the biggest pain in my working life has been any dealings with tesltra tech support. That is a fact of my life. I am not anti-telstra, and I wish they were better, but they just are not and I loath any time I have to call them.
Optus tech, though they don't seem to know much, at least answer the phone and tell me they are unable to help.
Look, if you are posting on this forum odds are you have some computer nouse. It takes hardly any to connect to a cable modem. if any at all. Optus tech don't need to know much

I can't comment on Optus as we don't have Optus cable in Perth, but I'll definetly vouch for Telstra cable. I've had it for ages, super reliable except for when my old cable modem fried and they replaced it within a day. Now they have the unlimited plans its awesome, not that I ever have the need to download over 10gb, its just that I don't have to worry if I do.
