hydraulic clutch problem Sat, 14 February 2004 08:36 Go to next message
Hi everyone,
After doing a motor swap in the GT4 I needed to replace the clutch fluid I had drained. The pedal is to the floor at the moment so I poured new fluid into the container and thought it was now just a matter of pumping the clutch pedal with the bleed valve slightly open to get the fluid to circulate. I am manually pulling and pushing the pedal with no resistance at all. The fluid is not draining from the container down into the lines. Have I missed something here or anyone know what the problem could be.

Thanks,
Anhar Khamas

close bleed valve, pull pedal up.

Ummmm, no

Pump pedal 10 or so times with valve closed
Hold foot on, release valve until foot reaches floor (its a 2 person job)
Close valve
Repeat until no air is in system

Laughing , i must have been doing it wrong all these years... no point pumping the pedal if fluid is not going into the lines... once it starts in there, you can pump away, but pressurising the line by pumping lots can introduce bubbles... Rolling Eyes

one of the best methods is actually to use vacuum to draw fluid thru the entire line before pumping...
anyhoo, whatever floats your boat Very Happy

I bled the clutch yesterday and used gravity to assist, since pumping the clutch wasn't helping. Basically open the valve, push the clutch in and leave it there for a few minutes. The fluid will slowly come out, and air pockets should remove themselves. This was actually more effective than pumping the pedal.

Found what the problem is. I have nicked the line whilst removing the engine therefore losing pressure and fluid Rolling Eyes that would explain my problem.

...that would also explain the bloody mess everywhere!

Some people bleed brakes by just filling the fluid, opening the bleeders and leaving it sit for a few hours. Others use a pressure bleeder. Whatever excites you, really!

CrUZsida has the right method. You may find that your clutch feels fully pumped up. Then the next day you have lost it again. Just keep on trying to get the air out.
