Celica T50 and AE92 4AGE Mon, 16 February 2004 21:21 Go to next message
I've just found out that the Celica T50 has a different input spline to the later model T50's (where I previously thought only the output splines were different). Because of this, it won't bolt up to my 4AGE... Do I just get a Celica clutch plate? Or do I have to get the whole clutch assembly? Will it then bolt up or fit to my AE92 4AGE flywheel? I've heard that the clutch sizes are different, the AE92 4AGE has a larger clutch than the earlier 4AGE's...

Are you sure you don't just have the original AE92 (FWD) clutch plate in there? They've got a MUCH fatter input spline. In that case, you just need the correct clutch plate (either 200 or most likely 215mm - check!)

I *think* the clutch plate in there at the moment is a 215mm. I don't have the engine with me (or the gearbox actually). Engine is at a workshop on the other side of town, gearbox is being rebuilt.

So... I'm guessing I'll need to get a clutch plate to suit the spline of the Celica T50, in a 215mm (assuming my AE92 FWD clutch plate is 215mm - will need to double check that)?

Measure the size and make sure, then I'd suggest you buy a new T50 clutch kit anyway, always worthwhile replacing the clutch when you replace the engine (usually!)

Yup, will measure the size. Umm, T50 clutch kit for a TA22 celica? Or for an AE92 Corolla? Or can I mix and match parts or something...

Thanks Smile

erm... i thought that the input splines were the same from the C50 to the T50 (early model).

I am using an AE92 SX clutch kit with a different thrust bearing on a gearbox from a TE72 (T18), which has the 20 spline output shaft.

I dunno....

Hmm, really? That's interesting. I was just told that the later T50 bolts onto the 4AGE, the earlier one has a different spline (20?) so will not bolt on...

I guess I'll wait for the gearbox to come back from the builders, and see if I can count the number of splines on the clutch that I have and see if they match... How come you had to change the thrust bearing?

Okay, the clutch currently bolted to the engine has 21 splines...

*edit*

Hmm, counted, and recounted the splines on my spare Celica T50, and it has 21 splines... So umm... I guess they should fit? Weird.

The larger supra boxes (which share their input shaft size with the GZE FWD box) also have 21 splines, but it is 29mm diameter, and the T50 is 23.8mm diameter from memory. However, as you mentioned, and seems to be the general opinion, the early FWD 4AGE box should have the same 23.8mm 21 spline shaft as the T50 Rolling Eyes

Sounds like you got some wierd assed problem there! Crying or Very Sad

The input spline on my box is less than 23.8mm, taken at a slight angle (calipers too long so can't get a straight reading) it reads 23.6mm, so it's probably closer to 23.4mm or so.

heres an idea mate.... take a clutch plate from a 4age FWD, and slide it onto the input shaft of your T50. Trust me, it fits.

As for the difference in splines from the early to late T50s'... thats the OUTPUT SHAFT MATE. The input shafts are the same.

If the input shafts are the same, I'm a happy man Smile Gawd the inconsistancies of information I've been getting... I guess you never really know until you actually put it together yourself huh?

Sorry for my bit earlier... Come to think of it, only FWD boxes I've played with ARE all GZE ones, I presumed the others were the same...ooops Embarassed I've got a few T50s lying around, and they all have the same input shaft Evil or Very Mad

I can also confirm the GZE box has the same spline as the W boxes Evil or Very Mad

Got the clutch off the AE92 today, it fits on my spare gearbox Smile So I would assume it would fit on my "proper" gearbox too Smile

Does $220 for a "heavy duty" clutch sound decent?
