Theres a sprinter guy in SA who can produce carbon fiber bonnets for Sprinters.

He is wanting to know who would be interested in them.
They will be like the Japanese ones, Carbn fiber top skin and metal frame.

Upon purchase you exchange your old bonnet and recive your carbon bonnet. Cost will be in the vicinity $400 depending on condition of your exchange bonnet. (he needs resonable bonnets to make new bonnets up)

considering it cost over $1200 to import carbon bonnets, I think this price is good.

please post replies here.

What colour is the Carbon Fibre?
Is the bonnet made from one piece of Carbon Fibre or joined?
Does it use standard fibreglass resin?
Is the Carbon Fibre UV stable?
Can you paint over the surface?
Is it vacuumed?
Any idea on price including freight?

Please reply ASAP as interested in quantity.

Thanks

I know the guy who is making them. The other nite he came over and I showed him the interest that is taking off over this. I'll speak to him and tell him to update on what is happening.

Now, what I know:
The bonnet that I have seen was the first out of the mould! All it was the top skin of the bonnet as it is top skin that wieghs the most in an AE86 bonnet. The carbon was laid last: so from the top (looking at top of bonnet)it is resin which can be painted to match your car colour. When the bonnet is up, you can see the carbon fibre sheet through the metal frame. I'm pretty sure it was one piece of carbon fibre. I'm sure fibre top skin is available.

I'll sms him now and tell him to get his sh*t together and reply here to let people know what's happening.

Oh, as for shipping: a big box Smile

If they are being made by who I think is making them, then they are most definately worth the money.

He's done a very very good job indeed.

Hi, This is Rick posting under Jaz's login.

After so much positive feedback after such a short period of time I feel I should update people on what is happening. Sorry for the slowness of my reply.

I am only making AE86 Sprinter bonnets

A's to Q's:
Stock bonnet: ~15Kg
Full carbon: ~5.5/6Kg dependant on locking system (factory or bonnet pins)
Half bonnet (carbon/metal frame): ~7Kg
Freight cost: Additional to purchase. Possibly COD but will look into when it comes around. Maybe too big for post, so national frieght or something with insurance to cover damage in shipping.

Details of bonnet: Construction is full woven sheet (black), these arn't carbon/kevlar!
Full carbon bonnet is made from two seperate moulds for top and bottom vacuumed together. Each mould consists of UV stable clear gel coat on surface followed by one layer of carbon backed by fibreglass.

The resins used are specific to the carbon fibre work.

Bonnets are paintable upon receival using regular methods.

For any further questions: call after 6pm on 0410 654 912

Can this contact of yours make other parts too? Couple of people I know would be interested in MA61 bonnets/front quarter panels, tail gates etc. Can he make stuff with an aluminium honey comb encapsulated?

Cheers

7kg? is that really gonna make that much difference?
Im just asking.. not looking for a flame war.. i just thought that 1200 spondoolies could be spent to make more horse.. therefore the 7kg wouldnt matter?
Just curious is all.. Apart that a carbon bonnet would look pretty tuff Nod

I have a plan.

For 400 bucks I will come around to anyone's house and make your AE86 7kgs lighter. You will need to get used to driving the car by yourself though.

That way I can take the money I make and get me one of these bonnets.............. Grin

I think the main thing is that the 7Kg is from the front of the car. Anyone can find 20Kg to remove from the rear of the car but finding weight in the front end to offset the weight balance change is alot harder.
