2JZ-GTE VVTi Wed, 18 February 2004 05:14 Go to next message
Guys,

Can you let me know what model Aristo/something else I think the VVTi 2JZ-GTE comes from?

What are your thoughts on the VVTi in a turbo engine?

Is it vastly superior to the previous 2JZ model?

Thanks!
Stephen

The 2JZ was updated across the board in 97/98 from memory, so any 2JZ built after then will be VVTi. You can find them in Supras, Crowns, Aristos, Soarers, and probably others as well.

No 2JZ-GTE in the Soarer, just the slow arsed GE Sad

Sorry I didn't see the "T" (must be getting old), so you'll only find them in the Supra and Aristo.

according to best figures, the 2jz-gte vvti makes 30 more bhp peak power, and 15 more lb-ft of torque (interestingly, at the same 3600rpm as the non-vvti version)

I've never actually seen a side-by-side unmodified dyno graph of each - but my insincts say the vvti is your better option, as long as you're not planning on going super nuts on the modding

From memory, the VVTi 2JZ's I've seen advertised are a LOT more expensive. For that sort of extra money, you might be better off spending it on an earlier 2J. Maybe some stage one cams or something?

I have to agree with the cost vs. return argument.

Are the advantages produced by variable timing lost completely when you heavily modify the engine?

New turbos, good computer, new cams etc..?

Isn't it probable that the VVTi would allow you to bring the revs up quicker from idle, thus bringing boost on that bit earlier?

Wondering on any thoughts about VVTi in a Turbo car...

You will still reap the benefits of VVTi with a modified engine, but there are two catches:

1. You will NEED high-end engine management (eg Motec) to run the VVTi.

2. You'll have to find someone who knows how to tune it.

Another catch.
It may be physically impossible to run a large duration, high lift cam AND VVTi.

Is there an actual date of changeover or was it a more gradual thing?

Yes there is an actual date, for the Supras anyway; I assume it would be the same across the board. Can't recall what the date is though...

I've done a bit of reading and it seems that the 2JZ-GEs turned VVTi in '98 but at an earlier date than the 2JZ-GTEs. Not sure if the 2JZ-GTE turned VVTi in late '98 or early '99.

It was August 96 when the 1JZ went to VVTi but not sure of the 2JZ version.

Has anyone seen any technical data on the VVTi function. I want to know the electrical signals that trigger the cam positioning.

it is impossible

the vvti with the 20v 4age is proven a bitch with high lift long duration cams, almost not worth it at all to run vvti

most people dont
