Changing Auto Kickdown position - Now Changed! *EDIT* - Pdf file on it Thu, 19 February 2004 13:25 Go to next message
Is it possible to change the kickdown point on a 4AFE EFI Corolla Automatic easily. Going up a hill requires around 3/4 throttle before the auto will kick down from say 3rd to 2nd. Most mazda autos I've driven are much more willing to kick back a gear. It's just annoying because you've lost all this speed before the auto has kicked down, or once its kicked down and getting up to speed again you back off slightly and it shifts up again losing all your power (Bad on long hill). What I've been reading suggests on carby cars a kickdown switch is connected to the accelerator pedal?? Would this be likely on this EFI corolla also and hence could adjust slightly? I noticed many of these model corollas have reluctance to shift back a gear.

Sorry...did a search and read a few books and manuals but can't find much except that some cars have a kickdown valve.

Has anyone played around with where there auto shifts back a gear in relation to throttle opening?
I realise it also has to do with RPM and intake manifold vacuum pressure.

You can try shortening/tightening the kickdown cable.
That might make it more responsive

Thanks UZ. Do you know where the adjustment would be - this won't harm the life of the gbox by making it more responsive will it? Have you done this before?

It will be on the throttle body.
There will be 2 cables, one to your pedal, and one to the tranny (at least there was on every other Toyota I have looked at).

As for the repercussions, I have no idea.

I also have no idea if its adjustable, and if it is, how to do it, but its worth a try.

Failing that just manually shift it back a gear as you go up the hill, and tap it back forward when you reach the top.
Its not that hard.

Should I give up on this or does someone know? Is it a straightforward job?

Depends, how is your knowledge?

Have a good look at it with a torch, and if you don't know, take it to a specialist and see what they say

I'm going to find out whether the auto is hydraulically or electronically controlled. I think if it is hydraulically controlled I have a better chance of making it more kickdown responsive. That Toyota description manual in the gallery is pretty damn helpful! Also found another one that I don't think was in the gallery www.autoshop101.com/forms/h16.pdf that explains about Electronically Controlled Transmissions. Thanks CruZ for being the lone ranger on this one. Surprised Apparently in ECT adjucting the throttle cable on the gearbox will only adjust line pressure and hence the quality of the shifts - however if hydraulically controlled it determines kickdown point also. The car I'm pretty sure has a TPS . I don't now if all cars that have a TPS have electronically controlled auto gearboxes. Will find out and let people know.

I was able to change the kickdown point by undoing the locknuts on the auto throttle cable (right most) and reducing the number of threads on the left side of the mounting bracket (hence convincing tranny it had more throttle).

http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~benl1981/photos/4AFE/IMG_0090.JPG

The car is now a heap more responsive. Only about 3 - 4 threads (approx 5mm) made the difference. The car kicks down much more readily and is a heap easier to drive. The auto turned out to be a A240L (Hydraulicaly controlled signified by L which allowed this method to make a difference - If it was a 240E (Electronically controlled) this would not have helped as apparently it only affects the quality of the shifts in this case. EDIT - YES IT WOULD...see pdf file in later posts

Much less throttle opening is needed now - if anyone else has similar problems I'd recommend checking it out.
This shouldn't be harmful to anything should it?? I reckon it may have been out of adjustment before? Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help cruz

Just found this link, this guy adjusted kickdown the same way I did on a LS400 so the method seems to work on Electronically and hydrauliclly controlled autos. I think some of the later models do away with the cable that allows this adjustment though (due to throttle by wire?.. mentions in the article anyway

Hope above link gives you the whole story - 2nd time I went to site they wanted me to pay to read rest of article. I've made a pdf which I'll put a link to soon..

Does anybody know if in a hydraulically controlled auto (A240L) if the OD button circuit is incorporated with an engine temp sensor...i.e. stopping trans shifting to 4th when car is cold even with OD on. I know this is the case on the electronically controlld g/boxes

Thanks

Here's the link to Pdf. Anybody know if Hydraulically controlled autos have OD circuit incorporated with a temp sensor to stop car using 4th when cold?
