Fuel mixture Display for $15

Hey kids. Just thought i'd show you how I made my fuel mixture guage.....
So I wanted a Fuel Mixture Display guage and opened my wallet and out fell $15 and a button...
This could be seen as a problem so an old guage lying around my house gave me an idea...
so off to jaycar I went and purchased the KC5195 Fuel MIxture Display Kit for $14.95
The first step was to gut the guage, some crappy VAC thing, when I ripped the internals out it came to me that the board would be too big

so I cut the board where the red line indicates...
After drilling holes in the now sanded guage face I glued the leds in and connected all the anodes, the cathodes were connected with wires to the underside of the board where the green spots indicate.

I mounted the board so that the trimpot could be adjusted thru the old bulb hole, that way I wont have crack open the guage if it needs calibration,

1 minute in photoshop later I'd printed out a face insert and glued it on...
reassembled the guage and voila...

Have you installed the gauge in your car yet ?
If so, how effective is it ?
Do the leds light up smoothly or is it hard to get a stable reading.
Compliments on the project by the way, I thought it was a good idea. I had in mind eventually to do an LED bar to display the fuel mixture but I like the re-use of the old gauge.

Looks good... very handy tool for the $$$.
What are the increments of the leds...??? what figures do they represent??? Do you think the Jaycar kit could be adapted to an LCD Display???

jay car has another kit that has a segment led display, its $63 tho...
I havent put it in the car yet because the oxgen sensor is way to hard to get to, as soon as I figure out the ecu wiring ill put it in...

By the way "Julian Edgar" wrote both the Autospeed article and the KC5195 article.

There are 10 LEDs on the display.
An o2 sensor will generate voltage ranging from 0.0v - 1.0v
The LED that is lit up is the voltage the o2 sensor is putting out.

Does it work with the Toyota o2 sensor (single wire)??

These things sure AREN'T accurate - simply because a normal oxy sensor can't produce an accurate signal anywhere away from 14.7:1. The LED kits are great to make sure your sensor is working etc., but NEVER tune an engine with any kind of balls with one... The more expensive one is a bit better if used with the recommended sensor, but still only an approximate guide.

mrshin is right
these are more wank factor than accurate
i have seen these work and all they do is goto rich when throttle is on full and lean when throttle is off
the autometer ones just bounce all over the shop
id rather spend 50 bucks on a dyno run to find air/fuel

yeah I decided not to install it... to much rice factor... its just a row of lights that moves when u give it gas...
plus if you piggy back the sensor wiring, does it affect the signal going to the ECU?
the EGOs signal is voltage based so If you wire in the guage in parallel it will not alter the voltage, only the current so it should be fine
