AE86/KE70 Sat, 10 August 2002 06:42 Go to next message
Someone told me KE70's are good as same to ae86 in design 9suspesnion setup, chasssis etc), so how true is this? I've always wanted a sprinter, but instead of like 3000 for a shagged sprinter (if I could find one), I can find any number of shagged ke70 four doors for like $500. The idea is to get a trueno front cut and just swap it all in, so:
-How hard is fitting the 4age-can I use the ae86 engine mounts etc in the corolla-like a straight swap?
-Can I fit the struts, brakes, control arms etc meant for an ae86 without drama?
-can an lsd ae86 rear end be bolted straight onto the ke70 rear arms and stuff, along with the disks?
-fuel tank and fuel system? I might just go carbies and toss the injection though.
-AE86 extractors fit?
Basically, I want to build a thrasher car, for a bit of mountain road action, and if the 70/86 are as similar as people have said, I just want to do like a trueno spec mechanical transplant on the old 4 door rolla. Sort of make an ugly ke70 bodied sprinter.
cheers,
floody

Okay, here goes.

1.) A KE70 is more like an AE71...... or an A engine powered T-18 (TE7x) as you call them in australia. That said, you can fit an AE7x crossmember in an xE7x car, and the chassis between the 7 series and 8 series on paper doesn't look much different.

2.) So I assume you could fit the crossmember without major drama. A KE3x crossmember into KE2x requires just some slotting of holes, and those 2 chassis' appear more different then xE7x -> AE8x.

3.) The AE86 vented struts (JDM that we have in NZ) will fit on KE7x control (lower) arms if you use the AE86 steering arms. For a little more camber here, use Corona TT132 steering arms, these have the holes for strut bolts on the other side of the nut. You'll know what i mean if/when you look at changing struts.

4.) The KE7x has a 6" diff I think..... same as a starlet. So, look up Starlet to AE86 diff conversions. I'd guess that you could swap them straight in (disc rear end use AE86 handbrake cable) as the F series needs a couple of mounts moved like 5mm, and I can't remember anything else about this swap off hand. (dodgy memory, so check up.)

5.) Don't toss away the injection stuff. It is easy to fit and you'll appreciate it afterwards. (i've had 2TG on twin sides and 2TGEU on EFI....... go EFI!!!).
Anyhow, to make it run fuel wise, run a Low pressure pump to fill a surge tank, buy one from appco for 90L. $85 NZ at 25% off retail. Fit an EFI filter before LP (they are same as carby, just flow more). Have LP feed into the top of a surge tank, get a external HP pump outa a old soarer or cressida suck from the bottom of the surge tank, and pump into the rail. Run a return into the top of the surge. This would cost maybe $150 all up.... cheaper then buying carbs and manifolds!!!

6.) AE86 extractors would prolly fit. Wouldn't surprise me if the engine bay is identical apart from mechanicals in it. Refer point #1.

Anyhow........ I'm boozed. hope this helps/makes sense Razz

I bought an AE71 before I bought my ae86, with the intention of doing that as my project car. When I got me a cheap ae86, I basically forgot about the 71 and did the 86 instead. But the cars ARE pretty much the same mechanically (4ac, t50, suspension), although the ae71 does have that charming borg warner diff in it, should be easy to stick a jap one in place of it if you so desire. Oh, and the xe7x cars have some damned fine 80s styling about them Cool

This is a very easy option which I have now chosen as my new project after selling the sprinter.

AE71 crossmemeber is a straight bolt up which means the 4A transplant is a piece of cake, you will also need a T50 from the AE71 or a sprinter, and the sprinter tailshaft, or you could customise the KE/AE71 tailshaft to fit the new diff. The borg warner bolt spacings on the end of the tailshaft dont match and I wouldnt use a B/W behind any 4A unless its the C variant Smile

As far as difs go I would look at getting something that allready has disc brake on it to save time later on , its really easy to find matches once you start looking around.

Front brakes are easy to upgrade and the booster so far has been up to the task with the bigger piston calipers, I would look at putting MX62 strutts or similar in (theres an article that I wrote on the website about doing this) as they are a lot bigger than the stock sprinter venteds.

You will also need to get a AE71 pedal box, clutch master, slave and either use the AE71 line or get a custom one made up ($60) to run the gearbox, I picked up my pedal box for $30 from P&PL

If you need any further advice you can contact me at IRA11Y@hotmail.com

If you are in Sydney feel free to pop by and Ill show you how it all comes together Smile
