what probs can I expect to run into while doing this, and should I replace my gearbox oil while I'm under there ripping things apart? I figure it's time to change the rear oil seal, see if that's the problem (and I'll be bummed if it isn't)

You can expect to drop the bloody gearbox on yourself and they can hurt if they land on the head
Other than that, just make sure you take EVERYTHING off and don't leave anything, e.g. reverse switch wires, clutch cylinder, gearshift, earth lead, etc. etc. etc.
Another thing that really is good is if you have the luxury of a hoist, and a 400 pound russian bloke who can lift the box into place with the point of his big toe
Oh, and don't forget the drain the oil as the FIRST thing you do, otherwise you'll make a biiig sloppy mess when the tailshaft comes out and you tild the box backwards. Use new oil when you stick it back together, especially if it hasn't been changed in 20 years. Also, take a good look at your clutch while its out, a new stocky type clutch kit doesn't cost that much and can save a lot of bad language later on by having to do it again. Law of averages will say that if you don't do the clutch now, you will be in 3 weeks time.
If the rear main seal in the engine is gone, it may be for a reason, namely that the bearings are worn and the crankshaft is getting all sloppy.
Good luck!

the fly wheel bolts can be an absolute bitch to get undone. you may need a rattle gun and some heat depending on how well they are done up or they may come undone as easy as anything. use locktite when putting all the bolts back in as you dont want them to come undone again. also budget for a new clutch kit and a flywheel grind may as well do it while it is out.

oh and a gear box can be installed on your own with two scissor jacks and about 1 hour to get everything lined up but having an extra set of hand or two may make the job slightly eaisier.

Don't go getting too excited with the oxy torch on the end of your crankshaft though... I've never had any trouble with flywheel bolts just jamming the flywheel up good and solid, and using a good quality socket on the end of a 2 foot bar (if you need more torque, get Zlatko the 400 pound russian to come give you a hand!)
