K series motor questions Sat, 21 February 2004 18:51 Go to next message
Hi all,
Been reading previous posts (mainly Stewarts) about building a modified K series motor, and have a few questions I'd like some help with.
just wondering where the 5K and the 4K-E motors came from. Are they from a local vehicle or an import motor? also why would you choose to build a 4K motor (apart from engineers cert. requirements) if by going to the 5K gives more c.i.d? and is there any reason not to use a 4K-C block, or are they somehow different?
Lastly, are the bolt patterns the same on these blocks. are bellhousings/boxes easily interchangeable? Until now I haven't played around much with Toyotas.

Thanks.

I think, the 4K-E motor came in some KE70 corollas, and KP61 Starlets. But these never came to australia so are very rare. (Same with the 3T-E motor).
5K was in the LiteAce van. But these are getting hard to find and the wreckers want good money for one because they know everyone wants one to bolt in a old corolla.

The 5K looks identical to a 3K or 4K, and everything bolts up the same as far as I know.

I think people work 4K's sometimes just because they are cheap, and a 5K is hard to find or costs more. Ask Stewart.

You can usualy get away from having to have a engineers cetificate if you use a 5K. Most states allow you to have a 1600cc in a KE30 without major mods.

supposedly the 3K and 5K blocks are stronger than the 4K blocks when used at high rpm for long periods of time, but i have had no problems with any of my 4K's.

4K over 5K? no engineers cert needed in NSW, 3K head bolts on to 4K block for 10:1 CR whereas 5K has dished pistons, so 3K/4K head is too low compression, 4K has solid lifters which are better for high lift (>400thou) whereas 5K has hydraulic.

and 4K's are dirt cheap. ACL pistons for them are cheap and better than the original 4K ones....

basically, 4K is cheap fun to play with. if you are serious about more power and MUST stay K series, then 5K/7K are good, but 5K is 1500cc, 4AG is 1600cc, both weigh about the same, and 4AG is better in every respect, and similar in price.

there have been a few SC'd and turbo 5K's around, but if i was going to the trouble of turboing, i'd do a 4AG.

also 4K is more revvy, due to lower piston weight, and lower valve train weight (since the valve train is the limiting factor for both motors)

a 4K blovk with 60 thou OS pistons with ported 3K head will be cheap, fun and hard to break and probably cost less than just sourcing a 5K block...
anyhoo, my 2c
Cya, Stewart
