Some more SW20/21 questions

Well it appears a new MR2 in on the cards, hopefully by next Saturday Anyway I've utilised the "Search" function here and on google, but couldn't really find what I was looking for, so...
1) I was reading some SW20 reviews and they were comparing the SW20 to a Honda CRX, one of the comparisons they made was "they are both front wheel drive" I thought, WTF? But I just assumed they were RWD, aparently now, so are SW20's FWD or RWD(I coulda sworn they were RWD!!!)?
2) Read around abit and aus delivered SW20's come with the 2L 3SGE. Now being a mid mounted engine and in a damn cramped space, is it possible to do some maintainance? I do my own oil/spark plug changes and as much stuff as I can figure out. Is the oil filter accesable without removing too much from the car? The pics I've seen from the engine bay I see I can change the plugs, but no idea as to the location of the oil filter.
3) Whats the cooling like? I mean Australia in summer is a damn hot place, how to SW20's cope with the heat? or are they prone to overheating?
Thats all I can think of for now, general opinions of SW20's & 21s would also be appreciated. Stuff like it seems the 3S has a flat spot @ 5000RPM.
Also if anyone's got any piccies of the boot(in the front), I'm curious as to how big it is, like feasable to go on holidays? Enough room to store stuff for 2 people.

1. Whoever wrote that review should be shot. With the engine located between the rear wheels, how could you come to the conclusion it's FWD??
2. Engine bay accessibility is no worse than most FWD cars. The oil filter is accessible from under the car, so if you have wheel ramps it's easy to do.
3. The radiator etc is mounted at the front just like any other car, so cooling isn't a problem. A friend of mine has a late-model SW21 and he never has any cooling problems even with the A/C running on a hot summer day in Qld.

Norbie, the eternal source for reliable information
Thanks mate, I also found it hard to believe that MR2's would be FWD, but seeing I've only taken a vested interest in them last week, I didn't want to assume things

the person should be shot fwd.... lol its not really classed as a rwd drive eith to be technical is a MR class.... which equates to rwd really....
motor very easy to work on any u will be surprised its a reasonably large engine bay... when you take items such as the air filetr box and some other componets out watch, how much space u will start to see.
good luck with ur buy. u will not be disappointed.

What the hell is a SW21 ????? The original Spider/SW20 convertible...??? I have never seen or heard of an SW21
What does the 1 stand for... If it is like the AW11 then it would be the second major revision of the SW body... But there was none... AW10-AW11 yeah... SW21 ???
As far as I knew the MR2 family went AW10-AW11-SW20-ZZW30.
But we are all here to learn so please correct me!

The second-gen MR2 got an update halfway through its life; improved engine and suspension among other things. The updated model was the SW21.

OK... Did a search and seemed to have answered my own question. SW21 was the US delivered version which had the 2.2 litre engine which they put in Mid late 90's Celicas out here (in Aus.).
I think you will find that unless the MR2 in question is imported from "America" then it is just a plain old SW20... Aus & JDM's.... ALL SW20...
Am I still wrong???

Sorry but I beg to differ.
SW21 is the US delivered model with the 5S-FE.
You'd better take a photo of your mates compliance plate... and have your money ready

You can't fit hardly anything in there. Its got the PS Pump, battery, spare tyre, brake booster etc in there.
Certainly not a good storage area.

The SW21 was also delivered here in Aus, just like the SW20 was, 2litre non-turbo, the turbo (not sure about the N/A but I assume so) was the 3rd gen 3S series motor which had more power(the turbo model of the SW20 and 21's where never sold locally in Aus). So

OK... if this was the case... what is the difference between a 1990 model SW20 and the SW21? One has the 3SGE and one has the 5SFE..??? Is my guess! trouble is there were no 2.2. litre MR2's released in Australia... or Japan. This is just one of those misconceptions that come from people reading international info on the internet... can you say CT20b?

naa there is reasnable storage room.... driving an aw11 which is smaller still the truck (back) has room for 3 cases of beer end to end and with jsut enough space to cram a stubbie holder in. the frunk (front trunk) has space for a few small bags and soft items but not a great deal. but still plenty of space for lugage for 2 is you pack light and smart....
iirc the sw20's also have a bit of space behind the seats and the firewall.... unlike the aw11's
