Question on tool purchase??

Sorry hope not too boring. I'm trying to buy a tool to help me pop the tie rod end ball joint out of the connection to the steering knuckle. I also want a tool that may come in handy at other times. I've seen a 2 jaw puller used for this (on the web)..would a 3 jaw work as good (anybody used one successfully for this). All the pullers I've seen have a point on the threaded rod, I pressume when using to seperate CV from hub etc (does this stop them being useful for the first intended job).
I have also seen what GT uses (the fork shown below..sorry to steal your photo man). Have people used the pullers on the balljoints, are they better than the fork?
So what would be the most useful tool do you think? I have done this job before just with single hammer, undoing thread so is flush with end of bolt and hammered upwards on it - but I hear you can do damage this way?? Didn't wreck mine (maybe just lucky).
Just bought a huge tool box from bunnings for $58 - with wheels, it could double as a suitcase , so need to build up my tool collection with some worthy additions - a job might help to fund this I guess. Thanks for listening

Might get myself a 3 jaw?? What do you think. I'm not sure if people know the website below but it looks pretty good:
Tie rod section:

List of repair pages:
http://www.mr2mk1club.com/repairsindex.html
DO the bolts on the tie rod have a little hole in the bottom for the point on the puller to sit in? Or do you just undo the nut a bit further past so the edge of the cone rest on the inner edges of the nut?
Thanks

Hmm. I've been looking into getting one of these things myself, I've always just used a hammer on the side of the steering arm to shock the taper apart...

ahh mrshin. yeah i saw one in autopro (maybe auto barn...too many auto...) for i think $28. Repco had some ABV ones for about $38 that looked a bit more solid (3 jaws that is). I might just go to supercheap, see if they've got one and get a harmonic balancer puller kit while I'm at it. The tools there are usually good enough aren't they for things like this? I don't think I'd buy some of there spanners etc . I've gotta stop using these gay smiley things all the time too.

the shock technique normally id whats used by many. i too have that fork but it makes a bloody mess of the BJ when it comes out!
i'd recommend the 3 jaw puller - makes it a far easier task!

I can't comment on other model Toyotas, but I know that not all pullers will work on the early celicas. You physically can't get the thicker ones between the tie rod and steering arm.

Been shopping at supercheap . The 3 jaw puller cost $18.50. There was the same size in plastic fully assembled for $30 but this one was in a box in pieces, this looks a bit shittier than the other but should do the job. I also got a "harmonic balancer pulley kit" for $25 to get pulleys etc off. The 3 jaw I got was the 2nd smallest they had. I hope it will do the trick -gold has got me wondering. I showed it to my old man, he reckons he has a 2 and a similar 3 jaw, wish he'd organise his tools a bit better so I knew what he had. He doesn't like me borrowing his stuff cause he reckons they always come back with grease on them ...which they probably do. thanks for the input.

Just had a trial to see if it worked. Seems to fit alright for an ae82 rolla. As the suspension is at full droop it creates opening underneath the ball joint on the inner side. It's only the outermost jaw that doesn't have that much to hold onto. Should be sweet though.
