My First Car was a Volvo an 83 Volvo 240 GL manual and despite there reputation was a very good car that surprised many people.

When I had It I always dreamed of putting a chev or ford V8 in it ( I didn’t know anything about Jap stuff) but at the time I did not have the time, money or knowledge (and I was getting sick of all the Volvo boy crap)

So I went and got my self a VLT

And have now fallen in love with Turbo 6’s

I am now at a point where I need to decide whether I should:

1. Keep the VL and keep spending on mods, maintenance and stuff

2. Up grade to a new car (R32 Skyline GTS-t 4 door)

3. Build the Ultimate Volvo sleeper. (Keep VL until Complete then sell and just get a shit box run about).

I have done a lot of research into to the Volvo project and know of a variety of engines that have been put in them ranging from Chev small block, ford small block, RB30ET, VG30DET, 1UZ, 1JZ Late model Volvo 5 cylinder turbo and Highly worked Stock engines with turbo.

What I basally want to do is bye a 240 wagon give it 200 + Kw, good handling and brakes. The most practical engine choices seem to be ether RB25DET, 1JZ-GTE, 2JZ-GTE or maybe a 1UZ.

But I need more info before I make any decisions. The main thing I need to work out is how much it will all cost and how hard it will be?

I am thinking about $4,000 $6,000 for the car, $3,000 for half cut and I have no idea how much it will actually cost to have the conversion done, engineered and on the road.

I think I should be able to pull out the old engine and stuff from the Volvo and strip the half cut. I also have a mate who I can get to do some welding work but I think most of the hard stuff will have to be done by a Work Shop.

If any one can suggest some one I could contact about doing the work or give me any other ideas or suggestions it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'll speak to a bloke here (in Canberra) who has done quite a few of these conversions (incl. his own 240 and a 760 wagon, both with 1UZs...What else is there??)

If he's agreeable, I'll pass your contact details onto him...if you're happy with this send me an EM biased99@homail.com with your contact details. If not, post 'em here.

Go for it! Don't let anyone put you off a Volvo, its a top idea. Not only does it not grab attention, it looks horn (meat cleaver styling does it for me!). Oh and the best looking thing you'll see is the look on the face of the HSV gang at the next set of lights! Probably within your budget, a 1JZ would be the best bet. If you're doing any work yourself, I might be able to lend a hand on a weekend or something.

1jz for sure
you could get a 2JZ for your entire budget for the conversion
or a 1jz-gte for $2500

and a budget of $6k is about right, providing you dont need too much work to be done by other people.

I have to admit Mr Burns I have never quite seen Volvos with the look of the examples you have provided.

If I had one I would put some L plates on it just to keep folks guessing................. Razz

Has anyone else done something like this since this thread was last posted? I am thinking of possibly doing something like this myself, cheap yet potentially demoralizing for a clubsport driver Very Happy

Despite the resurrectedness of this thread, i will take a stab in the dark at the guy in Canberra who has done these being Errol <cant remember his lastname> who works out of his workshop at the back of Carco in Belconnen.
