AE86 rear hatch gas struts Sat, 10 August 2002 23:47 Go to next message
Hello gents,

One of the very minor things about my car that is starting to really shit me is the fact that the rear gas struts no longer have the gusto to hold the hatch up (Im forced to use an old broom handle often).

I have talked top the guys at Repco and Auto 1 and of course there is no specific replacement for the AE86 but I suspect that the strut used may be in common with another Toyota model does anyone know? Or has anyone replaced these struts?

They look like they just pop-off a ball clip that is bolted into the body of the car! I have also heard that you can re-gas your factory struts........has anyone done this and is it a cheaper option?

Thanks.

The best one to use are the AE82 Seca struts, they are a little stronger than the sprinter ones due to the large amount of weight they hold up with the bigger hatch. They are a little fatter and whne the boot is raised it sits about 3-5cm higher but they are a perfect fit. The only down side is that if they are brand new you need to hang on the hatch!!, If you let it go it will damn near rip it off the hinges as it flies up Smile once they are worn in a bit they are fine though Smile and last for ages

Does AE92 GTi struts fit in a AE86? I think they've got really good struts.

Will the front struts of a AE92 or AE82 fit in AE86 as well??

IRA11Y said that the AE82 will lift the AE86's hatch up, what if I use lowered springs?? Will this solve the problem??

What's a good bolt on replacement for AE86 front/rear struts from other toyotas?

Thanks for any info.

I use & recommend Koni fully adjustable shocks to hold up my.. err.. hatch??? $!@#!@#

I think people are still pretty confused..

anyway..
To: IRA11Y, what's/where's P & PL, coz I still want to replace the dead Tokico units that I'm using..

btw. the rear hatch uncovered a fairly huge hole in the bottom left corner after I removed the glass, I'm having my fingers crossed with the fibreglass/stainless steel bodyfiller, will sand down and prime tomorrow and check the strength... Confused

If you can push them in by hand more than about 1cm they are too worn IMHO

Well why not stick some Monroe GT gas struts on your hatch... good luck closing the bloody door though!

Interesting to think that people got the two confused - at least it made me smile - thanks guys! Shocked

small problem with the suspension struts is they won't bounce the hatch up, but it'll give you plenty of exercise trying to open and close the hatch! Grin

Am I right in assumming that with some force the strut (as opposed to any suspension component..... Rolling Eyes ) that supports the hatch will pop-off it's attachment, or is some tool etc required.

Thanks.

Re: AE86 rear hatch gas struts Thu, 15 August 2002 14:27 Go to previous messageGo to next message
the tool is called an "open end spanner" and if I have not remembered wrong, it's no. 12 (mm) but be very careful as you losen the bolts as the charged strut could send the spanner flying across your face as the bolts comes undone Shocked

Or should I suggest to undo the bottom bolts first as the weight of the hatch will at least hold the strut down, same when installing the strut, should install the top bolts first so the hatch will help compress the strut so you can do the bottom bolt easier..

If you a really cheap way to fix the struts (ie free) simply lift the hatch up to its fully open position, get someone else to hold it up, and then lean on the body of the strut near were the chrome shaft slides in.
This bends the shaft slightly which stops it falling down, but will still allow it to be pulled down past the kink.
I've done this to several older wagons (which generally have heavier tailgates) which were either owned by tight-arses or were not worth spending money on.
