I've owned my MX83 for less then a week and the head gasket has blown. You've gotta know that I'm not happy.

Can someone point me in the right direction to have the engine either repaired or replaced? I live in Melbourne.

I bought the car from a "used" car dealer - do I have any legal avenue to use to get them to fix it?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

firs things first, unless they gave you a warranty with the car, you have no leg to stand on.

Second, how do you know its blown? I.e what symptoms does it have?

most importantly imo, dont replace it. rebuild the one you have! I just spent $2300 rebuilding my 7mge, and that included a brand new head, fully rebuilt, and all genuine parts. I now genuinely have a new engine...it goes hard, runs quiet and is perfect. Cant be happier.

Thing to remember about exchange engines, most of the 7ms wont be much better than the one you have...

if you were in brisbane i could give you a hand Sad

having said that, if you decide to rebuild it, do it yourself/ help someone so you can keep an eye on things. I was unlucky enough to have bloody pits in my block...big enough to cause the hg to blow again. We put devkon in them, and had the block surfaced 9 tho.
I was also glad i decided to pull down the bottom end, to discover a big end bearing almost eaten right through. had i have just done the head, this surely would've spun eventually...then another rebuild!

That's not entirely correct. If they are a licensed motor car dealer they can cause themselves a whole lot of problems. That said, sometimes it's easier to just take the hit and pay for it yourself as it's often a whole lotta hassle.

Rebuilding a 7MGE is possibly one of the least educated things I have heard of someone doing. That said, if it's for a daily driver and has not been purchased for the all-but-obligatory turbo powerup then it may be a viable option.

OK, my story is this - I have the thing 2 days, travel about 200k's and it starts to make gurgling sounds that seem to come from just behind the dash every time I accelerate. When I turned off the car, boiled water (no coolant in this baby) filled the reservoir.

Ever the optimist, I booked it into Natrad to get the radiator serviced and after I parted with my $300 they told me that they had trouble getting the air out of the system and it probably had a blown head gasket. Thanks Natrad.

Does it sound like it's blown? It still idles perfectly and the temp gauge isn't going through the roof.

I'm a mechanical novice, so the advice/assistance of any seasoned campaigners would be most welcome.

I'll get a few quotes on what a workshop would charge tomorrow. Any recommendations on who I should call?

I thought you legally had 3 month and 5000km warranty on cars from registered used car lot. Check Consumer rights or Fair trading etc. But yeah I guess they could just dodge it up or not do a "proper" job. I'd be a bit frustrated with that though..I guess it can happen with any used car, always a risk.

Head gasket replacement at mechanic is usually about 700 isn't it. If you just wanted to get it on the road and take the risk on it either fix it yourself or get mechanic you can trust. But V8s idea may save you effort in the long run. Or in with the import motor (people say to replace seals and cam belts) and conversions cost money and time. Depends what you're after.

All the best. Do your homework on it. It's bad it happenned now but when the car is so "new" but I'm sure it'll restore your faith in it as time goes on.

$700 soon turns to $2000 quickly

If you discover you have a:

Dented block
Corroded + bend head
Timing cover where water pump outlet is so corroded theres a hole in it! (easy fix)

hence my reasoning for doing it yourself, and doing it properly. Do it dodgy and 6 mths later if youre lucky, itll be apart again.

Also knowing your shit counts here. I fixed the dents in my block by cleaning them out with bit of wire, and then put devkon on them...(its like a two component mixture that turns to substitute metal)

Oh and with regards to the corossion and dents, its not only m series, jzs suffer too!

ROFL, I like the mars bar bit, but I'll side with Ed here.

The engine is basically good, and with a little care and attention, it will be fine. That said, if I had $10k and lots of time, I'd do what Norbs did and put in a 2JZ-GTE, but my car already came with a 7M-GTE.

And I have a spare headgasket waiting along with some ARP studs !!!

You're not going to believe it - the dealer is repairing the motor.

I'll let you know how things turn out.

Do whatever you can to inspect the work carried out.

IMHO, I would negotiate a cash payment and do the work yourself, taht way you know the std of workmanship and parts quality that goes back in.

I hate car yards !!!

How old is the car?
And statutory warrantee should be in place. Have you spoken to them, the key is to do it as soon as possible. And a good mechanic will tell if the car is about to blow a head gasket, so look for misgivings in their statements. And if you can prove that the guys new it had a BGH, the'll be paying for it. Its called Duty Of care.

Also try Toyospares in bayswater.

Well the old MX83 has been back on the road for about a week and all is going well.

Thanks to all those who offered their support and best wishes.

The dealer has even called to check that everything was going OK. Used car salesmen have just jumped real estate salesman on the lower levels of the food chain.
