ive got an alloy sandwich plated w58.
Im buying a steel sandwich plated w58.
"maybe" the w58 is out of an ma70. If not, its a ma61.
Just need to know if the shifters are in the same spot?

The steel ones are the W58's, the alloy plates are W57's and W55's. This being said, there are known to be a very small number of alloy-plated W58's getting around.
The shifter position of the MA70 will be a couple further back than the MA61 one so while it will fit the box, depending on where you sit the box it won't fit the car.

The number of alloy-plated W58's is so small that most people refer to the W58 as the one with the steel sandwich plate.

The shifter position has nothing to do with the material used in the sandwich plate. There are many different shifter positions for each type of W5x box; the only way to know which one you have is to find out which car the box came out of.

My 2 points
1. The shifter position doesn't really matter, it's easily swapped from one box to another anyway
2. I've seen more aluminium 58's than steel 58s. They'd be 58s because they came fitted to 7Ms etc. just that a lot (but not all!) of them seem to come with the alloy plate.

Mr Shin and Norbie has it in one.
Sandwich plate construction and shifter plate location is not relevant, as the shifters can be swapped easily, me having just done this twice in the last week.
Cheers,
Mitch.
