Need info on private import laws...

Hi guys,
I'm seriously looking into buying an 86, and I have a few questions. I've heard that if I were to buy a car from Japan, I would have to own it for a year before I could bring it back into Australia. Would this apply, if I had a friend in Japan who buys the car for me and ships it over here, then transfers it onto my name? Are there any other ways to bring a car in other than hold onto it for a year, or order it through an imports dealer?
I have a friend in Japan who is an avid enthusiast of motorsports. He has owned 8 86's, been featured in Options DVD, and he's a pro driver. He's also good friends with Nomuken, the owner of the 'Uras' tuning shop in Japan. He's willing to help me out if it's possible to somehow get a car into Australia.
So what do you guys think?
Edit: sorry I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum. Could a moderator please move it to a more appropriate forum, or the General Discussions one please. thx.

If the car is over 15 years old you don't need to own it for 12months. You can import 1989 and older models this year without any restriction. For 1989 models you will have to wait until the appropraite month before you can apply to import them.
Eg. Oct 1989 model can only be imported in Ocr 2004.

Sorry to over take your thread but your question seems to be answered.
I've heard that for a newer car you have to own it in Japan for 12 months. Do you have to live in Japan as well? How much would storage be in Japan for 12 months?
I'd be really keen to import a Toyota Aristo if the prices could be low enough. I saw one for sale in Australia for $60,000!! I'm sure you could do it yourself for a lot less.

Yes you need to live in the country in which you own the car. In Japan you also need to show proof that you own a car space before you can register a car in your name.

No i don't
I might have a mate moving to Japan though for 12 months to work. Although he has no idea about cars and would be difficult to organise anything with.
