Camry Engine info

Hi Guys
My girl friend wants to buy a Camry station wagon somewhere between the 1996-2000 models. The problem is that it has to be manual. Now i have heard stories Thea the 4 cylinder 2.2 liter is pretty crap out on the highway and the six is the way to go but i have also heard other stories that the six is not a very reliable engine and have a tendency to self destruct.
Any views or help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jas

Keep away from 1996 models if you don't like self destructing V6 engines. 1997+ with the 1MZ-FE V6 are far more reliable.

It will probably be hard to find information on these cars on a forum like this. Most of the posters are younger and own older models, the Camry you mention is quite modern. Perhaps if you have a family mechanic it might be worth dropping by and having a quick chat to them to see if they know any problem areas. They will be a lot more helpful if you act like you'll bring it to them for a pre-purchase inspecation

Finding a camry in manual form is more a lottery than a certainty. I was looking for a V6 camry wagon in manual form myself recently, and i had no luck, the best i could manage was a 4 cylinder manual wagon. I'm sure there are some out there, just might be a bit hard to find.

dont discount the 4 cyl models either, although not anything grunty they can out pace quite a few cars. also look into the sv21 (was it 22 for the wagon?) although old most are still in good nick and going strong 300,000kms later
fleet cars are usually auto huh... pitty

I agree with what every says about the six. My mate had one and said "oh this is a V6", and i said "p-off, doesn't feel like it".
I reckon the size of the Camrys are too big for the engine. I've got an SV21 that's only done 158000klms (and it will not do anymore... seeing that it's in the driveway, written off!) - SO MUCH FOR MY MOD. PROJECT!
But i found that i would be sitting at the lights with 'P Plate Commonwhore drivers' and i'd drag them and give them a run for their money. That was in my SV21.
And for those people who dis' Camrys, i suggest you think about what you are saying. (It's funny how they have the same sort of specs as a Celica).
Anyway back to car searching for me

My mum has had a 98 camry 4 cyl manual from new and it has never given any engine / mechanical trouble at all, and its up around 85,000km now.
The 4 banger is extremely fuel efficent (we got from canberra back to the central coast on half a tank a few years ago) and there nice on the freeway, just underpowered.
Can't comment on the V6. I've driven a few though (widebody and post '97 models, man and auto) and there very smooth but theres no low end shove.

Mate, we (our family) has just been through ALL this, we had just sold the landcruiser 'cause it was too exxy and mum wanted a manual camry wagon.
unfortunately they were rarer than a v12 Charade in decent form and only in 4cyl. The only manuals that we were able to find were in the widebody shape ( <1997) and didn't have much poke at all and were very very spartan in what they offered.
Apparently the model before the current one (ie, the one after the widebody), that ran from somewhere like 1997 to 2001 or something ???? - the last of the camry wagons - did come in manual, but I never saw one in our weeks of looking.
My grandpa has an SV21 wagon and loves it. not manual, and not the car you are looking for. I know there are manuals around, and they are very tough and not to bad really. My cousins in tassie have one and love it. (manual sv21 wagon)
You will probably find 3-4 in NSW + VIC in the Widebody shape, manual, and 4 cyl and they will price to about 12k max
What we ended up doing was buying a Subaru Liberty manual wagon. An incredibly well finished car and quite quick to boot. Cheap on the fuel as well.
I was sad to leave the toyota badge behind, but hey, Caldina's didn't make it to Australia.
They are a little more expensive off the bat for similar year vintage than the camry, but you can find them with similar kilometres and similar price, just maybe 1 or 2 years older. What I tended to find was people with camry wagons often took advantage of the toyota's "indestructability", and they sometimes seemed a little worse for wear. Generally I found the Suraru's well serviced.
Anyway, thus endeth the lecture, I hope my experiences of the past month have been some help to you anyway.. cheers
Rob
Edit: some stuff wasn't written very clearly..hahaha fixed now

Guess I broke the stereotype then! I've got a 2001 widebody V6 Camry grandpa car in kitchen appliance white
Its no ferrari, but it definately aint a falcadore either , and suits me just fine as a daily driver inbetween driving the weekend toy.
They feel quite sluggish, but it has more to do with the fact that it is sooo smooth & effortless compared to some of the other rattleboxes in its category.
But as mentioned already, its damn hard to find a manual wagon. Plenty of manual sedans though in both V6 & 4 banger.
Cheers
Phil
