Turbo 22RE - Corona Wed, 25 February 2004 08:37 Go to next message
So I picked up a Corona real cheap, registered, roadworthy etc.

It goes suprisingly well, this is the first Toyota I have owned.

Looking in the engine bay there is a ton of room on the passenger side of the bay, and an efi intake on the other...

Has anyone got any experience fitting a turbo to these motors ?

from what I have found so far the ECU runs a AFM making it easy to add a bit of boost.

I am interested in doing this on the cheap more to learn about the process and see what I can achieve by myself.

so I have managed to find myself a BallBearing Turbo from an RB20 (R32 Skyline) I love eBay.

Out of interes the Corona is a CSi, with Drums on the back and no LSD. (Pulls Doubles in the wet most of the time)

Can anyone help me out with ideas on how much boost the factory Air Flow Meter will take ?

Will I need extra injectors if I only run 6psi ?

Will the 22RE-T manifold fit in the engine bay of the corona or should I attempt to make my own ???

Any help would be most appreciated.

Lots of good info.

the stock 22RTE Ex mani sucks. It places the turbo very low against the block. Its log style doesnt flow well at all. It interfers with the steering componets on several models. Better if you build your own manifold.
the stock EFI will handle 6psi. IF you do run lean swap in some 4AGE "blue" injectors. just a bit bigger and wont throw ecu codes. 22RE's respond very well to boost. Makes for lotsa torque in the midrange. good luck.

I have been told u can trick the afm into thinking less air is going in then what there actually is. I think u run oiut of fuel with stock injecters very quickly. Dont know much about the injecters with the ecu though. Do they have to be certain ones for the ecu to read them???

right. you can turn the wheel tighter to inject less fuel if you have larger then stock injectors. But the ECU will only compensate for a small % before it can't handle it. Depending on the year and country of the 22RE it either has 182cc(grey in color) or 200cc(round plug, red in color) The 4age "blue" are 210cc and the 22RE ECU can adjust for them nicely. It's usually 3 teeth tigher on the wheel. And they plug right in and fit the fuel rail. They are also the same injectors on the 18RGEU's(blue 210cc)
