so....

http://www.technologie-entwicklung.de/Gasturbines/ VNT15-Turbo/body_vnt15-turbo.html
it's quite a nifty, fairly robust looking mechanism, might be easily coked up tho...

I want me one of these with 300-350hp rating Very Happy
anyone got any leads?

I know mercedes use the same concept on their turbo deisel engines of late, i also know that trucking manaufacturers are adapting this technology, so if your lucky enough to score one of a new iveco international or something that should give you the boost to give u the horsepower you require.

you would still need a decent wastegate with one of these things? (unless you subscribe to the "use a blow-off valve so you don't stall the turbine" theory?)

and, image what speeds you have to get it up to so it overspeeds? if 200k RPM is normal max speed?? Shocked

seems the point is it doesn't need wastgate, since the vanes straighten out when boost has been reached, so that the exhaust gas going thru turbine doesn't add much to the shaft rpm...

hmmm, 200k+rpm?? i imagine that sounds a bit like a plane taking off Wink

What I want is one of the new turbos Garret is working on for the 48volt cars. They have a built in "motor" that can generate 5lb of boost from idle and then when the exhaust is enough to spin the turbine it switches over to generate electricity so there is no need to have an alternator. The motor can also be used to control shaft speed for production cars so that there is no need for a wastegate.

We looked at this technology when we toured Garret last year, very informative tour and the guys are super helpful. They are also working on other ways to use the electricity generated by the turbo such as coils in the flywheel to use it as a motor as well during accelleration. All of this looks good for the future of high performance small capacity internal combustion engines.

As far as I know Garret are also working on VNT but the future looks to be the electric assist turbo.

On the same note about the Garret tour they were quite cautionary on the future of turbo factory cars. The reason for this is that it is hard to get cat light off quick enough to pass emissions laws when you have a big hunk of cast iron in the exhaust path that has to get heated up by the exhaust gasses before the cat gets up to temp. So there should be a lot of interesting metalurgy going into new materials for turbine housings in the near future.

oh cool, i'd heard a little about the elec assisted turbos... will be a whole bunch of gadgets coming with the higher voltages..

VNT looks like a great way to make current turbos more efficient. In the aftermarket scene it is the dynamic range of the turbo that is important (for street cars) and it will be interesting to see how the elec ones work for this, rather than the relatively limited range of production motors.

yeah, light off time has been an issue for some time... i like the idea of fuel/air injection and burning in an exhaust combustion chamber to heat it up faster... mmm NAWWS Wink Very Happy

so when's the next garrett tour? Wink i should hit them up for a job Very Happy i'm suprised they don't use much in the way of thermal barrier coatings already.

VNT turbos are only Used on Diesel engines ATM, Due to the Exhaust gas TEMP being lower and the self lubricating effect of the diesel on the VNT vanes . They tend to sieze up the Vanes and over Boost if you use them on the Petrol engine ......
