possesed SV21 ECU

im not 100% sure actually what is wrong with my SV21 camry, but i put the car into the local mechanic to get it looked over and this problem left them scratching their heads. $150 worth of diagnostic work later and the best they could offer was that they got some "strange voltage readings". i asked a few people and everyone is saying ECU chip is the problem. What basically happens is the car is VERY hard to drive slowly, as in through parking lots etc because slowly accelerating to about 1800rpm, the revs start jumping up and down erratically with a result similiar to stomping the accelerator to the floor and then letting it all the way out and then repeating at a fast rate. if i do this in neutral, i can make my revs jump up and down between about 800rpm and 3800 rpm without moving my foot at all. when this happens and the car is in gear, its whiplash central. i have no idea what it could be but like i said the "experts" reckon ECU

Jinx,
My bet is that it is a vacume leak.
Take a look at the hose from the Air Flow Meter to the Intake Manifold (big black hose about 50mm diameter}
If it's cracked or split or loose it will give you rough idling or hesitation.
Cheers
T.

from Haynes Repair Manual, SV21:
Problem: Engine lopes while idling or idles erratically:
1. Vacuum leakage
2. Leaking EGR Valve
3. Air Filter clogged
4. Faulty or misadjusted carburettor (not likely since most are EFI)
5. Fuel Pump not providing sufficient fuel to Fuel Injection System
6. Leaking Head Gasket
7. Timing Belt and/or pullleys worn
8. Camshaft lobes worn

ok, i can rule out the clogged air filter, the misadjusted carburettor because i dont have one, and im fairly confident its not the headgasket because the car runs fine when i accelerate normally. the timing belt shouldnt be worn because i had that all checked out and i wouldnt think it was the fuel pump either because it performs well otherwise. as for the vacuum leakage, the leaking EGR valve and the camshaft lobes, those could all be possible, ill add that to my list of things to check/ replace.
thanks very much for the info

TPS is throttle position sensor, WOT is wide open throttle (ie foot to the floor).

jinxinferno wrote on Fri, 27 February 2004 16:12 | k, im a bit of a noob when it comes to abbreviations for car parts, im guessing TPS is throttle position switch, how would i go about checking the output, as in where abouts should i put the multimeter? and to be dumb, what does WOT stand for?
|
you need a multimeter .. and you probably need to identify on the TPS what is the WoT switch (if it has one) and what are the TPS wires ... with the itention of measure resistance between the wiper and output of the TPS
although this refers to a different ECU, it's what you;ve got to do...
<http://www.megasquirt2.com/manual/mwire.htm#tps>
some TPS combine the TPS and WOT so you should search thru this site for a wiring diagram for your ECU and TPS that shows wire colours.

all of them - particularly ones that are stretched with excessive motor movement.
Quote: | thanks for your input btw, this sounds like the most likely cause of my cars 'red pants in dacks' behaviour. ill get it all checked out asap. thanks again
|
woops - i meant red ants in your dacks...

I dont know whether I'm just in a silly mood, but the idea of the car running like it has red ants down it's dacks just made me crack up completely - and is also very apt

yeah, it is a good analogy, anyway, thanks for the info. i have spoken to a few people about the possibility of it being due to the TPS and have got a fair bit of "hey, yeah, i didnt think of that". so it sounds like you could be on the money chuckster.
